1Password security on 'open' computer

My wife has a tendency to leave her computer unattended and others have access. If she is not logged into 1Password and others surf to a website will they be prompted to login or will the login be automatic? If 1Password is logged in is there any time limit where logoff will become automatic? Other than administrative 'cleanup' is there any reason to stay logged into 1Password?
Thanks,

  • Hi @btremaine,

1Password has many security features to automatically lock on its own as well as preventing auto-save prompts from coming up while 1Password is locked. 1Password cannot save new data without unlocking the vault, which means the master password is required. So, first thing is to make sure the security settings are in place.

To do this, have her open 1Password, unlock and go to the File Menu > Preferences > Security. In there, you can configure 1Password to automatically lock after a certain period of inactivity time, lock when the screensaver turns on and many more. You can find out more details here: https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-windows/4/en/topic/security-tab

In the Preferences > Auto-Save, you can turn on the option to prevent auto-save while 1Password is locked.

With that aside, it is not a good idea in any situations to have her computer account unlocked longer than it needs to be. She should lock or sign out once she is done. Without knowing what kind of security policy is in place on the computer, what's to stop someone from installing a keylogger or malware to capture whatever data the next time your wife attempt to unlock 1Password or copy passwords from 1Password?

Once the system is compromised in such a way, there's nothing 1Password can do to protect her.
