Can't add vault from Dropbox

I continued to have problems with my main hard drive.

1) Did a clean install followed by adding Dropbox where I store my vault for sharing across devices.

2) Downloaded 1PASSWORD from your site and added license.

1Password 5
Version 5.4.1 (541003)
Agile Web Store

3) Cannot add existing primary vault from Dropbox. 1PASSWORD says it is searching and clicking on file in Dropbox does not add it.

1Password Version: Version 5.4.1 (541003)
Extension Version: n/a at this time
OS Version: OS X 10.11
Sync Type: Dropbox

    Hi, @rsvaught

That definitely doesn't sound right; sorry for the difficulty! So, if you've done a clean install, I assume that means you had to re-install all your software from the ground up, is that right? Did you actually install the Dropbox software, or just copy over your old Dropbox folder? I'm sorry if that seems like a Mickey Mouse question, but want to make sure we've got the basics covered here before we proceed to more esoteric troubleshooting. If you've not downloaded the actual Dropbox software, make sure you do that. If you have, then this should work quite seamlessly. However, if you're sure Dropbox is installed correctly (and logged in) on the newly-repaved Mac, then please reboot the Mac and try again by simply navigating to your Dropbox folder in Finder and double-clicking on the Agile Keychain or OPVault you have there (depending on your situation). This should launch 1Password and the Mini, and present you with the lock screen. If that still doesn't happen, let me know -- and describe what you do see, please? Thanks.

    1. Downloaded Dropbox first and synched. All files updated.
    2. Downloaded 1PSW from your site and installed license. (rsvaught@mac.com)
    3. It added my ancient iCLOUD vault
    4. Double clicked my vault in Dropbox and it was added as a secondary vault. (Clicked the wrong one in Dropbox first and it was an old copy.

    SO

I tried to delete 1PSW to get back to ground zero. Got this message:"There is no application set to open the URL x-onepassword4://quit
It has been some time since I used 1PSW 4. Emptied trash and 1PSW was gone.

    Next

    1. Logged out and then back in. Ejected all but my boot drive and an empty one.
    2. Downloaded a fresh copy of 1PSW
    3. Installed. Got "Move to Applications Folder? / moved it.
    4. License was already installed. Suspected that it didn't delete all 1PSW files as it should have.
    5. Used Uninstaller this time.

Back to ground zero and repeated the process. License was still there as were the three vaults.

Need to remove the two old vaults.

Ah, thanks for the elaboration and clarification - it led me right to where things went awry. Like a lot of applications, 1Password stores its actual data in a different location than the app itself. On a new installation, 1Password looks for evidence of/data from any older versions of itself, and offers to import that data. If you had data in both iCloud and in Dropbox, it may have simply found your older iCloud data first and offered to import that. You should've been given an option not to import that, but don't worry - we can still fix this easily, by erasing all your existing data remaining in your Library folder.

To do this, I'd like you to download the Data Reset Utility for 1Password 5. This is not an official AgileBits product, so you'll have to authorize its use on your Mac. It's simply a small AppleScript put together by one of our developers to automate the process of starting fresh with a new vault. Before we go too far, you should back up your existing data by selecting File > Backup from the menu bar. Then follow these steps to start over with a new vault:

    • Download the Data Reset Utility for 1Password 5
    • Double-click the ZIP file to decompress it (if your browser didn't do that for you automatically)
    • Control-click on the tool and select "Open" from the shortcut menu
    • Follow the prompts, and 1Password should give you the chance to start with a new vault. Make sure you select your Dropbox data this time.
    • Please let me know how it turns out. I look forward to hearing back from you!

P.S. - You will need to re-license 1Password after taking these steps, so be ready to do that as well.

That did it and I now have the right and only the right vault.

One exception was that the license was still there so I didn't have to add it. That is a little scary.

Wish Apple was as good on fixing their "hang on boot" and "Fusion Drive split" problems. I have been working on those problems for over a week now including having to re-install Yosemite on my machine to fix the Fusion Drive. Some simple command lines followed by using Yosemite's Disk Utility fixed it. Apple removed the capability from El Capitan's Disk Utility.

So far the clean install is working, but adding all the apps back is going very slowly.

Glad to hear things are finally in order regarding your 1Password vault, @rsvaught! I wish I could help you with the Apple stuff, but that's a bit out of my wheelhouse. Good luck with it!
