How to use password generator in version 5

There is a lot of information here and some of it sounds like the problems I'm having with the password generator in version 5. The workflow in version 3 was very neat and very quick. I clicked on "Generated Passwords", the name field was already selected and all I had to do was type the name of the site or service and click "save". The password was copied to my clipboard, the password was saved with a name I could easily recognize.
Now I'm not even sure what the best way is for me to generate a new password. There is no "generated passwords" listing anymore, and when I hit command-n I have to make a choice about what I want. I select password, and the name field is selected and I can enter a name, but I still have another click to actually generate the password. But then I'm still not done, I then have two more clicks to select the new password and then copy it to the clipboard.

Hi @KnightOfNight,
I've moved your post to a new thread to avoid confusion, since you have your own questions about the password generator which aren't necessarily directly related to the various questions in the previous discussion. I hope you don't mind!
So, the first thing I'll say is that, yes, there are definitely some differences between 1Password 3 and 1Password 5 where the password generator is concerned. You're used to the way it worked in version 3, so I can see how trying to use it the same way in version 5 would make it seem difficult and clumsy. But it's actually easy to use - it just means getting used to a bit of a different workflow, and I'll be happy to explain how that works.
Although the password generator can still be used within the main 1Password app, it's actually much easier to use it from 1Password mini (which is what we call the 1Password icon you see in your Mac's menu bar at the top of the screen - you can also access 1Password mini by clicking the 1Password extension in your browser's toolbar, if you have that extension installed). We have some more information about that here: Generate a strong password
Using the generator in 1Password mini allows you to fill the generated password on a website when creating a new account, or changing your password for an existing account. When you submit the registration or change password form, 1Password should prompt you to save a new Login item or update an existing one. If you need to change a password for an existing website account / Login item, we explain exactly how to do that here: How to change a password for a site saved in 1Password
To take a step back for a moment, it sounds like you used to create Login items for websites directly from the 1Password main app. If so, it's actually much better (and easier, I think) to create them from a web browser, by letting 1Password prompt you to save new Login items. That's because saving a Login item using the 1Password extension saves additional details about the web form, which are used to help fill that form again in the future. If you're not currently saving Login items from a web browser / 1Password extension, we describe how to do that here: Saving a Login
Does this help? If you have more questions about that, just let us know - we're here for you! :)

Thanks for all the information. I don't mind at all, very good idea to start a new thread.
That said, this doesn't really address my workflow needs though.
I generate a lot of random passwords for various things, web pages, GPG keys, etc, and so I always go right to the app. to do so.
I have long since disabled automatic saving of new login items because I have seen so many incompatibilities at various web pages, and often the password doesn't get saved correctly. Quite possibly this was legacy v.3 bugs that I got used to working around, and I wouldn't be having so many growing pains if I hadn't skipped from 3 right to 5.
When I installed version 5 I disabled the mini app icon in my menu bar. I like to keep that as clean as possible and I didn't see the need for it. I'll re-enable that and see how that workflow works for me.
I think it's time to revisit all of my habits and see what the new version of the program can do for me while trying hard to limit comparisons to version 3. Even with the PEBKAC, there is still no other password manager that I would ever trust with my sensitive info. In a few weeks I'll revisit any issues I still feel are more the software than me.

@KnightOfNight: We've made some significant improvements to 1Password's saving and filling since 1Password 3, so I'd say it's definitely worth your while to give it another shot.
But I will say that it sounds like part of the problem you describe may simply have been due to saving new Login items on signup pages. The best thing to do is to (re)save a Login item at the actual login form, since that's the one you're going to want 1Password to know how to fill for you. And if you're still having trouble, providing the URL of a site you're struggling with will allow us to test it ourselves and see what we can do to help.
Be sure to get back to us with any questions or concerns you have. We're always here to help! :)
