How to merge two .agilekeychain files in Dropbox?

My wife and I have shared a 1PW vault and .agilekeychain file on Dropbox for several years, but a few weeks ago, I updated 1Password on my MacBook Pro Retina (now running El Capitan) which is synced to the same .agilekeychain file as my iPad Air (iOS 9.1), and iPhone 6S Plus (iOS 9.1).

The new version of 1PW created another agilekeychain file on Dropbox (which I didn't intend to have happen - I wanted to sync to the same file we had been using, but evidently, I didn't point the new version of 1PW to the existing .agilekeychain file).

My wife has MacBook Pro, iPhone 6S, and iPad mini. I didn't upgrade her version of 1PW when I upgraded mine, and she has continued to sync the 1PW apps on her devices with our original .agilekeychain file. As a result, we now we have two different .agilekeychains, with many PWs in common but quite a few that are now different. We need to merge the .agilekeychain files so that we're once again both syncing all six of our devices with the same .agilekeychain file. (My version of 1PW was downloaded from the AgileBits site, and hers came from the app store. They're both version 5, but the version numbers differ in the second and third 'decimal place'.)

To summarize:

  • As I said above, my wife and I are currently syncing to two different agilekeychains, both in Dropbox. She is syncing her iPhone, iPad, and MacBook to one, and I'm syncing my MacBook, iPhone, and iPad to the other.
  • We want to merge both .agilekeychain files into the same primary vault, which is the setup we've had for several years.
  • Her current 1PW data is identical to the data in the .agilekeychain file she has been using and my 1PW data is identical to the data in the other .agilekeychain data. We each keep the 1PW files on all our devices synced to the apps on our respective Macs and iOS devices, so everything is up to date.
  • We need specific instructions about how to merge the two .agilekeychains in Dropbox so that all six of our devices sync to the same keychain file.

@randb2 I have added to your new thread the same post you posted at the end of another thread. It's easier for you to find answers if both your posts are in the same place and it also makes support easier.

Hey @randb2! Thank you for providing a detailed description of your situation and what you need to accomplish. After reading things over, we'll need just a bit more info to advise you on what to do:

    • Are you and your wife using the same Dropbox account?
    • What device did you update 1Password on (where the additional Agile Keychain was created)?
    • Where are the Agile Keychains located in your Dropbox account (or accounts, depending on if you're sharing them)? By where, I mean the file path. For example, mine is in Dropbox/Apps/1Password You can find the file path on your Mac by going to the Dropbox folder, navigating to the Agile Keychain, selecting it, and pressing ⌘ I on your keyboard. The path will be in the Where field.

If you can answer those questions we'll see what's going on! :)

    Thanks!

Yes, we use the same DropBox account.

I updated 1PW and created (inadvertently) the new .agilekeychain on my MacBook.

    /DropBox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain (mine)

    and

    /DropBox/1Password.agilekeychain (hers)

@randb2: Excellent! Here's what to do:

    1. Disable Dropbox Sync on both Macs (1Password Preferences > Sync, set to None)
    2. Enable Dropbox Sync on your Mac and choose this vault: /DropBox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain and Merge
    3. Let Dropbox finish syncing
    4. Enable Dropbox Sync on her Mac as well, choosing the same vault: /DropBox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain and Merge
    5. Let Dropbox finish syncing
    6. Create a test item on each and verify that they sync over
    7. Delete the extra vault copy: /DropBox/1Password.agilekeychain

I hope this helps. Please let me know how it turns out! :)
