How can I stop 1Password from trying to load itself from a SuperSuper backup drive once and for all?

I ran into this scenario after updating to the latest version (5.4.1). Trying to run the app, it wouldn't run. It complained about an incompatibility with a file on my superduper backup drive. The only fix was to reboot with the backup drive disconnected. How can I make 1p stop trying to load from the backup drive?

This is an OS X problem. In order to overcome it you need to:

    • delete any copy of the 1Password app file (only) from the backup drive; and
    • exclude the 1Password app file from any further backups (because, of course, you can always re-download it if you need to).

Provided you don't use any app cleaner tool when deleting the app file none of this will interfere with your 1Password data.

If you are using SuperDuper there are two automated possibilities. I haven't used either of them myself.

    1. The manual tells you (though I found it confusing) how to modify a standard backup to a new kind that exclude items.

    2. Alternatively, you can run a shell script at the end of a backup, and that script can be written to delete the backup version of 1PW.

  • Howdy @jholtzman,

It looks like Steven and danco have been able to provide a good bit of info here, but I just wanted to chime in as well. When you open 1Password, OS X will look for the 1Password helper app. It is really good at finding things, so in your case it ends up finding the helper for the other app, the backup. There are several ways of resolving this:

    • Exclude the 1Password app from your SuperDuper backup
    • Exclude the external copy of the 1Password app from Spotlight (this is the same tool OS X uses to find the helper)
    • Manually eject the drive and relaunch 1Password

You can also use Time Machine to back up your files instead of SuperDuper — OS X is trained to not search on Time Machine drives. Hopefully that helps clear things up a bit.

Thanks everyone. Excluding the backup drive from Spotlight solved the issue.

Why it wasn't already excluded is another question... I could swear I had done that already. Oh well...

  • @jholtzman Glad to hear things are up and running smoothly now. :) If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know. Or just say hi once in a while. We like that too. :+1:
