Wrong version of mini [remove extra copies of the app]

After updating, when I try to launch 1Password, I get a message that the wrong version of 1Password mini is launched. But it still runs. But then later I get the Master Password screen from 1Password, and it won't take my Master Password. I enter it, but it will not submit. It just sits there with no way to proceed. Fortunately the "wrong version of 1Password mini" still runs, or I would be in deep trouble.

Urgent to get this working or my system could become unavailable!

More info: it looks like it is trying to start 1Password mini from an attached external drive that has a backup of my system on it. Why would it do that? I am going to disconnect that drive and see what happens. Hoping that that does not kill the working version that I have now.

But if 1Password mini is being run from an external volume, that would explain certain other oddities, where on occasion entering the master password for 1P mini takes 20 seconds per character.

I was able to correct the described conditions by doing the following:

    1. Physically disconnect the external drive to prevent 1Password from trying to start Mini from there.
    2. Quit Chrome - in case 1Password mini was loaded/cached there, and thus have a mismatched version.
    3. Restart my computer -- this was necessary, because trying to start 1Password gave a message about trying to start 1Password mini from the external location which was no longer connected.

    Please note the following:
    1. It is very disconcerting when 1Password refuses to submit an entered password. That is, you can enter what ever you want, but it does not take any entries. I assume this is because due to the error conditions, 1Password is in a locked up state. This is not good -- at least it should give an error message saying it cannot accept the Master Password until such and such occurs.
    2. When the message was displayed about the wrong version of 1P Mini, there was a link to a page about having multiple versions of 1Password. This appears to be completely irrelevant to this issue, misleading, and adding further stress to the sitatuion.
    3. Why would 1Password try to load a version from an image backup on an external drive? Does it just look around and find one and says "yep, this is the one I want"? This is very bad behavior. (Photoshop Elements seems to also do things like this, so you have good company.)

Unfortunately this is an Apple bug. Basically, 1PW tells an Apple process (launchd) "please start 1PW Mini" and, instead of looking for 1PW Mini on the startup drive it just looks at all versions on all drives and picks one in an arbitrary manner.

As to your point 2, in fact you do have multiple versions of 1PW on your system, just not all on the main drive, so the link should be correct.

Depending on your backup procedure, either automatically or manually exclude 1PW from the backup. As long as your data is backed up you can always download a new copy of the application if needed.

@jasimon9: I'm sorry you ran into this issue. Unfortunately, as danco mentioned, OS X launches 1Password mini, and it often will choose the wrong one if there are more than one available. Excluding (or simply deleting) duplicate copies is the only way to avoid this.

@danco - regarding omitting 1P from the backup -- it is sufficent to omit 1Password5.app, or are there other supporting files that need to be omitted?

Just the app as far as I am aware. 1PW, like most applications, is a package (that is, a folder that shows to the user as a single file) and the "wrong" 1PW Mini is inside the wrong 1PW.

@jasimon9: danco is correct. Simply eliminating any extraneous copies of the app itself will ensure that OS X can't launch the wrong one — because there's only one available. Cheers! :chuffed:

Most of the time that external drive is not mounted. I have excluded 1P from the image backup.

    Hi @jasimon9,

Thanks for the update. Hopefully that will take care of it, but let us know if the problem occurs again. We'll be here for you. :)
