2 Backup Folders, both with recent backups

Hi,

I've been cleaning up my HD on my MB Air in preparation of upgrading to El Capitan. Today I noticed I have 2 backup folders in my Application Support folder (see attached screen shots). One of the folders has 50 backups and the other has 72 backups - not sure why if it's only supposed to be keeping 30. Also very confused as to why October 2015 backups would be in both folders. I'd like to delete one of these folders and trim the number of backups to 30, and insure it will stay @ 30 backups without me having to do it manually.

I've been using 1Password for a very long time - I believe this Mac had v3, v4 and now v5 installed. Thanks in advance for your help,

Terry

It appears as though you have on your Mac, and have been running, two copies of 1Password—one which you bought from the Mac App Store (the 1Password.app) and one which you obtained from the AgileBits store (the 1Password 4.app). If that is the case this knowledge base article should help you:

How to remove multiple, conflicting copies of 1Password from your system

However, you may need more guidance because it looks as though you're going to need to check that you have all your items in the "right" version. The first thing to do is to check each version like this:

    • Open either 1Password.app or 1Password 4.app and check, first, your total number of items as well as the total in each category. Make a mental, or other, note of that.
    • Second, double click the magnifying glass icon at the end of the search box in the main app and change the search criteria to Recently changed items, so that you can see what has recently changed. Make a mental, or other, note of that.
    • Quit the version of 1P that you're running by using ⌃⌘Q (control + cmd + Q)—which quits 1P mini as well as the main app
    • Launch the other version of 1P and repeat the same checks.

You should at least now have some idea of which version is more up to date—and whether you need to transfer data to the version you want to keep (which I guess will probably be the Mac App Store version). Note that each time you switch between versions you should quit in the manner I've mentioned, to avoid conflicts between the versions.

No doubt you'll want to post again for more guidance but that should get matters started for you.

  • Hey @tginther! It sounds like you had to versions of 1Password installed at one point. Stephen's reply is spot-on, so if you have any questions feel free to let us know. :)

Hi - sorry I've been traveling and haven't had a chance to respond until now. I only have 1 version of 1Password running, which is 5.4.1 installed in Applications->Utilities. There is no other version of 1Password on my system. Going into Spotlight verifies this: when I type 1Password into the search field, 1Password 5 is the only application that comes up, and looking in Applications and in Applications/Utilities verifies this single version. My ~/Applications folder is completely empty, so that's not the problem either.

Looking at the file details of backups that were taken 3 minutes apart on 10/21 (screenshots attached), show a backup at 10:07am in the 1Password folder, and a backup at 10:10am in the 1Password4 folder. I can say with certainty I was not running 2 versions of 1Password 3 minutes apart that day. Safari is my default browser and I use it 90% of the time. I can't recall, but I may have used the 1Password extension in either Chrome or Firefox that day. Could that be the issue? If not, I'm not sure what's going on here...

BTW, I purchased 1Password from the agilebits.com website originally back with the 1st version, and have continued to upgrade via the website/through the application - I have never purchased it in the App Store. As a sanity check, I just went to purchased applications in the App Store and 1Password is not in the list.

@tginther: Sorry for the confusion! It wouldn't have to be the two different store versions of 1Password, but simply multiple copies of the app, even if some are located on an external drive. Using the browser extensions shouldn't make a difference, as they are just getting their data from 1Password mini.

And thanks for sending those! Your first screenshot is of backups for 1Password 4/5, which use the same support folder. The second is for 1Password 3 support files. So if you've got fresh backups being created there, you've still got 1Password 3 running somewhere!

At this point, the best thing to do will be to generate a diagnostic report and send it to support+forums@agilebits.com so we can look at the logs to determine exactly what is happening:

    Sending Diagnostics Reports (Mac)

Just be sure to include a link to this forum thread and your username in the email so we can 'connect the dots'. We will get to the bottom of this! :)
