Pre buy query

Will shortly be purchasing iMac desktop which 3 adult family members will use. Each family member will have an iPhone. One family member also has a new MacBook and one an iPad Air. If each download free version or buy Pro versions will all three be able to use 'their' 1Password on the shared iMac desktop. I'm concerned that only one account can be used on the desktop. Thanks. Keith Bacon.

  • Hey @Bacon! Great choice of username, and of course surname. ;)

I'm concerned that only one account can be used on the desktop.

No need to worry about that! 1Password for Mac's licensing depends on where you purchase the app. If you get it from the AgileBits Store, you can use it with up to six Macs in the same household. If you get it from the Mac App Store, you'll need to use the same Apple ID across your Macs. Since you mention that three of your family members will be using the same iMac, you'll only be using one of those computers. :)

Just make sure that you move the app to the /Applications folder so everyone on the computer can use it. Data will not be shared across accounts. You can learn about the differences between the Mac App Store and AgileBits Store version of 1Password in this knowledge base article.

If each download free version or buy Pro versions will all three be able to use 'their' 1Password on the shared iMac desktop.

There is a free trial for the Mac app, which can be downloaded from our website. On iOS, the app is based on a freemium model, which means you'll get some of the features for free and the Pro features can be unlocked with an in-app purchase.

Once you get 1Password installed on all your devices, you'll want to move your data between them. This can vary for each user, but the current syncing methods in the cloud are Dropbox and iCloud. If you want to use iCloud sync, you'll need to get the Mac App Store version. There's also WiFi sync if you prefer keeping things away from the cloud. The best way to get to know 1Password's syncing options is by reading this article. It has a great comparison of all the supported sync types in our apps.
