Mistake in initial App Store version sync setup

Okay, this is embarrassing. I have been using 1Password for years and just switched to the Mac App Store version from the website version. In going through the initial setup I made a mistake on the iCloud sync setup page. Everything seems to be working, though. As I was clicking the button to move on I noticed that the field on the page had asked me for an email address. But I thought it was a password field and typed that. My brain was not able to stop my hand quick enough and I clicked and advanced to the next screen. Everything seems to be working, however. I have 1Password on several iOS devices and they are now syncing fine with iCloud and picking up changes I make on the Mac.

1) Was that field anything important?
2) Is there a way to change it?
3) Is the password I accidentally typed now in the clear somewhere?
4) How can I prevent myself from doing stupid things like this in the future?
5) How can I speed up the communication between my brain and hands?

Okay, I hope to at least get answers to the first three.

Hey @agilefan1587! It sounds like you input your password in the email address field for our newsletter. It shouldn't accept anything but an email address, so I've made a note of this for our developers to look into.

Since that field is usually an email address, the information in it was sent to our servers, but rejected since it wasn't actually an email address. For peace of mind, it's best to export everything in your vault and start over with a new vault. To export the data in your current vault:

    1. Click 1Password in the menu bar
    2. Select Export and click All Items
    3. Enter your Master Password and click Continue
    4. Put the export somewhere easily accessible, like your Desktop

It's good to note that this export is unencrypted, and you'll want to delete it once you import your data into 1Password again. Please don't store it in the cloud or anything in the meantime.

Once you've exported your data, you'll want to remove your vault from iCloud. You just exported things, so your data is safe on your computer and you can add it back to iCloud after this. To remove your data from iCloud, click the Help menu, select Troubleshooting, and click Reset iCloud Data. Then confirm that you want to remove your 1Password data from iCloud.

Next up, follow the Mac App Store steps in this guide to start over with a fresh new vault on your Mac:

How do I start over with an empty vault?

This will also give you a chance to sign up for our newsletter using a proper email address. :)

Once you've started over on your Mac, you'll want to do the same on your iOS devices by following this version of the guide above. Since you've removed things from iCloud, starting over on your iOS devices will mean the slate is wiped clean and all the data comes from your Mac once again.

Lastly, you'll want to follow this guide to import the data you just exported from 1Password for Mac. Navigate to the .1pif file and select it to import the items, then set up iCloud sync in Preferences > Sync by selecting your vault, clicking the drop-down menu in the right pane, and selecting iCloud. You can then add the vault back on your iOS devices just as you did the first time round.

And now, to answer the remaining questions:

    4) How can I prevent myself from doing stupid things like this in the future?

Slow down a bit when setting things up and make sure to read things? :) You're doing fine, don't worry! Skipping over stuff is a normal part of interacting with computers.

    5) How can I speed up the communication between my brain and hands?

Many have asked this question. I type quite fast and I still hit lots of wrong keys. It happens. Speed and accuracy are a sliding scale of sorts. ;)

Hopefully I covered everything here, but if you have any questions about getting things moving, we're here to help you out. :pirate: Feel free to post any questions you have.
