I am not getting the Do you want to update Login dialogue, when changing password

I've updated a couple of logins due to Watchtower advising me to, however after generating the password I don't get the dialogue to update the login so it still remembers the old password. The generated password history doesn't seem very helpful as it just tells you how long ago it generated a password but not what that password was!

This is happening to me too. 1Pwd just doesn't ask to update logins after I generate a new password. It's pretty frustrating.

[@gtfarrell, I noticed you posted the same comment in our Mac Beta forum. To avoid confusion, I merged that with this discussion so we don't duplicate efforts between here and there. I hope you don't mind!]

    Hi @DigiDoug and @gtfarrell,

I'm sorry you're not getting prompted to update Login items! The first thing I wanted to explain is that when you click the Fill (or Copy) button in the Password Generator in 1Password mini, that creates a new Password item in 1Password. That serves as a safety net for situations like this. Simply open the main 1Password app, click on the Passwords category on the left sidebar, and you should have a new item for the new password you generated (you can sort the list by Date Created if it helps). From there, you can copy/paste the new password into your Login item for that site. We have more information here: How can I recover an unsaved password?

Now, there's another issue here, which is that you aren't being prompted by 1Password to update your Login item when you change your password on that site. It's possible that 1Password simply isn't able to detect the password change on that particular web form, which happens on some sites. But it's also possible that you've encountered a specific bug in the current version of the 1Password extension, which prevents it from prompting you to update a Login item when it should. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience!

That bug has been fixed in the latest 1Password extension beta, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, the fix should be included in the next regular update for the extension. I don't have a timeframe for that, but in the meantime, if you'd like to install the beta extension, just follow these steps:

If you don't want to install the beta extension, there's another workaround: Instead of clicking the Fill button in the password generator, you can highlight the generated password and then copy & paste it into the change password form. When you submit that form, 1Password should prompt you to update the Login item.

I apologize for the inconvenience and confusion! Hopefully this helps, but please let us know if you need anything else. Thanks! :)

It would be really helpful in this situation if under Password History rahther than just saying generated 37seconds ago it actually had direct access to the password it generated so it can be copied in to the field

@DigiDoug: That's definitely an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how 1Password would know which item's (if any exists) password history to save a newly generated password to. It's certainly worth exploring though, so be sure to let us know if you have additional thoughts! :)

When you use the Safari extension on a site to generate a new password and the Update login dialogue doesn't show up there is an item in the extension called Password history. This correctly identifies that it auto generated a password 37 (or whatever) seconds ago. This password is stored as Drew says in the main app as a Password item. This is what i want to see as a Flyout item ( if that's the right name for it) next to where it says 37 seconds ago.

Am back at my Mac now so just to make clear what I am talking about here is a screen grab. So where it says A Year Ago there should be a fly out or something that allows you to copy that password from 1 Year ago (or 37 seconds or whatever) to sites that don't auto-prompt. I can and have done what Drew said but opening the main 1P app to copy and paste is a complete fag.

This site didn't ask to Update Login either so must be that bug - hope to try out the beta soon. I haven't used this password by the way!

    Hi @DigiDoug,

You'll be happy to know that you can use the ⌘⇧C ( Command+Shift+C ) keyboard shortcut to copy the password from a selected item under the History list in the password generator. Our developers are working on improving the History list, so hopefully it will be easier to use that in the future.

As far as opening the main 1Password app to find the generated password and copy it to a Login item, please remember that you don't necessarily need to do that at all. As I explained previously, if you remember to copy the generated password from 1Password mini and paste that into the web form, 1Password should prompt you to save or update a Login item. The bug in the current extension only happens if you click the 'Fill' button.

Or if you install the beta extension, this should all work correctly with 'change password' forms.

I'm sorry again for the inconvenience. Please let us know if you need anything else. :)
