Bought Windows/Mac combined version without realising iCloud synch would not be available :-(

Hi,

Firstly great product !

I was mobilised into action by the recent TalkTalk breach and decided to buy a password manager for the first time - 1password was the obvious choice ...

I firstly bought the IOS version for my iPad and iPhone and then looked into how to extend to my Windows PC's (home and work) and Macbook (home). A combined license seemed the obvious choice and as I had used the iCloud synch on the IOS version I assumed it would work on the Mac version.

After just installing I am disappointed that the version bought direct as part of the combined license does not have the iCloud synch option, I don't remember seeing this restriction on the site originally ... I would obviously like to be able to synch all Apple devices via iCloud and only switch to drop-box to 'refresh' the vault for windows. I tend to use mostly Apple devices and now realise I could have used the 1PasswordAnywhere for windows devices anyway. iCloud is of course my preferred option which I cannot now use on my Mac :-(

Is there anyway to extend my Mac version to include iCloud or downgrade my combined license to Mac only and use 1PasswordAnywhere for windows ? - then I won't need to install the app on my work machine either !

Regards

Martin

You haven't said when you bought that bundle, but if it was withing the last 30 day, AgileBits will issue a refund and you can buy the Mac version from the Mac App Store. That will give you access to iCloud for syncing on your Apple devices, but only those - not Windows. If you registered for the forum with the same email address you used to buy your bundle, someong from AgileBits will be along to confirm your wishes and issue the refund, if that's your choice. If you used a different email address, send a message from that email address to support+licenses@agilebits.com requesting the refund. Be sure to include a link to this thread.

HOWEVER (isn't there always one of those?), there are limitations to iCloud that you should think about. One of the limitations is that you won't be able to share access with anyone else, unless everyone is using the same Apple ID. And, if you want to use more than one vault, only the Primary vault will sync via iCloud. Secondary vaults won't sync. I don't know if those issues will affect you, but I would not be at all surprised if you end up wanting to use multiple vaults, particularly the longer you use the product. A secondary vault is a way to share part, but not all, of your data with others or to separate work from personal information. And 1PasswordAnywhere is not accessible through iCloud, so you won't be able to use that for access on your Windows machine.

If you are willing to use Dropbox for syncing, you will be able to do all of those things - sync multiple vaults automatically, share some or all of your data as you chose, and use 1PasswrodAnywhere from web browser on a Windows box.

Moreover, your iOS applications are also able to use Dropbox, so it's a universal solution. If you ever wander over to Android devices, those won't be able to use iCloud either. But they can use Dropbox.

One additional word about the Windows application. If you keep that bundle and use Dropbox, your Windows machine will always be current with all you other devices. There would be no need to remember to update the Windows installation or to dealt with read-only access to 1PasswordAnywhere through a web browser.

Cloud solutions generate strong opinions from users, but as far as security is concerned, there is no difference between them. The security for your data relies completely on your strong master password and the encryption used by the developers to protect it. Although it wouldn't make any sense to do so, your data would be just as secure if you attached your database to a public web site.

Thanks for the input - I bought on Saturday night (24/10/2015) using the same email. Food for thought then about the sharing features and iCloud restrictions but ...

My key requirement was for simple and seamless integration across all my Apple devices; additionally to also be able to access the 1password keychain across windows devices including my rarely used home PC and the one at work and (in emergencies) public ones.

I assumed you needed a windows license to be able to access the keychain on any windows machines - I realise that is not necessary and that only a drop-box account is needed to host the keychain file and html file in order to access them. With the IOS/Mac versions I can still use drop-box if I wish to keep the keychain updated for use on windows machines.

So yes it would be great if an AgileBits person confirms that I can swap licenses or enable iCloud support - however it can be achieved.

    Thanks

    Martin

    Hi @k1ano,

I'm sorry for any confusion about all that! Hawkmoth's reply is spot-on, and I just wanted to add a few things in case it makes a difference:

First, iCloud sync is only available in the Mac App Store version of 1Password for Mac because it uses Apple's CloudKit technology, which can currently only be used by apps sold through Apple's App Store. We'd absolutely love to be able to include that in the AgileBits Store version of 1Password as well, but unfortunately that's not currently possible. We have more information here: Why does iCloud require iOS 8, OS X 10.10, and the Mac App Store?

Unfortunately Apple doesn't currently provide a way to convert a license for the AgileBits Store version of 1Password to the Mac App Store version. So if you want the Mac App Store version of 1Password, you'll need to purchase that separately at the full price shown there. Keep in mind that you were able to get a discount on the Mac/Windows bundle from our AgileBits Store, but Apple does not give us the ability to give special discounts like that on the Mac App Store.

There's also the question of whether or not you want to refund your license for 1Password for Windows. If you use Dropbox sync, you'll be able to use the 1PasswordAnywhere feature. But 1PasswordAnywhere has some limitations that you wouldn't need to worry about in the full Windows version of 1Password. For example, 1PasswordAnywhere is read-only, only shows one URL in Login items, and does not support attachments, folders, tags, or any of the security audit features. Also, it does not integrate with the 1Password web browser, so it cannot fill your data on websites.

Because iCloud sync isn't supported in 1Password for Windows (and if you plan to use 1PasswordAnywhere), you'll need to use Dropbox sync. You mentioned that you would ideally use iCloud sync between Mac and iOS, and occasionally switch to Dropbox sync in order to have your most up to date information on Windows. Since you plan to use Dropbox sync anyway, is there a reason you would still want to use iCloud sync in the Mac and iOS versions? Like iCloud sync, Dropbox sync works automatically in the background once you've set it up, so it would probably be a lot easier for you to simply use Dropbox sync on all your devices instead of switching back & forth between sync options.

I also wanted to mention that Dropbox sync is a great sync option, and it's how many of us here have always synced our 1Password data. 1Password is secure by design and your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so with regard to security there's no difference between syncing 1Password data with Dropbox or iCloud. 1Password simply doesn't depend on the security of either to protect your data.

As Hawkmoth explained, Dropbox also has the advantage that it can be used to sync secondary vaults, and also share vaults with friends, family, and co-workers (it's not currently possible to share anything between iCloud accounts).

Sorry for such a long reply, but I hope this helps! If you would still like to refund your purchase (or perhaps just part of your purchase, if you decide you would like to use 1Password for Windows), please email us at support+licenses@agilebits.com to request the refund, and include a link to this forum discussion in your message. Of course, if you have more questions, just let us know! :)
