I lost my 1password data when my laptop drowned last week.

I recently started a 1password account. Then last week I destroyed my laptop, drowning it with water. I have a new laptop I'm using and would like to transfer the 1password data from my account to this laptop. None of the options to recover data are working for me, though. What can I do?

There is no 1Password "account"—all your 1Password data are held locally on your Mac, unless you have backups or previously chose to sync your data to another device.

Do you have a recent backup of the old laptop? Did you sync your 1P data to any other device?

I never synced my 1password data to another device. I did purchase an "Internal hard drive enclosure" and was able to put the files saved on the bad computer onto a new laptop. Do you know whether the data would be stored on the hard drive of the bad computer, and if so, where I would look for it and how I would bring it over into 1password in my new computer? Thanks!

    We're rather guessing without knowing:

However, if you were using 1P4 or 1P5 this knowledge base article will tell you where to look for your 1Password data:

Where does 1Password store its data?

Note that the location will differ depending on whether you were using the Mac App Store version of 1Password or the AgileBits store version.

@lbritton: Indeed, Stephen_C provided links to a good overview. And if you can tell us what version you were using previously, we can also help point you in the right direction. I hope that you have your data there so it can be recovered. I look forward to hearing back from you! :)

Thanks so much everyone, for your help with this! I had 1password 5, and I'm not sure of the version number of my OS X, but I had just recently upgraded to El Capitan. Thanks!!!

You're most welcome! There have only been two releases of El Capitan thus far: 10.11.0 and 10.11.1. Just make sure you update to the latest when you get the chance (if you haven't already). And we're here for you if you have any other questions about 1Password. Cheers! :chuffed:
