HELP! I thought the 1PW vault was backed up in iCloud??
Rebuilt my Mac yesterday with a fresh install of OSX and I thought that 1PW was in iCloud and would automatically "come back" when I re-installed the app? ... have I lost everything? Was my vault local and not iCloud??

Your vault is indeed local, and only local, unless you do something to put it elsewhere, such as by activating syncing by iCloud or Dropbox.
Do you back up your system to an external drive or a remote service? Time Machine? If so, you'll be able to get your data back. Tell us, in that case, how you do your system backups.

Yes, I have Time Machine backups ... but I don't want to restore the whole system, is there a way to only get my vault file??

Hey @Darren66! When you set up 1Password on your new Mac, you should have been asked if you wanted to import data from somewhere else. Was there an option for iCloud?
If that's not the case, you can restore specific files from Time Machine by opening the app, which is located in your Applications folder. You'll want to navigate to 1Password's backup location by using
⌘ Shift G
. Type one of these paths, depending on the version of 1Password you have.Mac App Store version: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/
AgileBits Store version: ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/I recommend selecting the Backups folder and clicking Restore to bring all the backups to your current installation of OS X. Of course, you can restore the most recent if you'd like. Once you've done this, you can import your data into the new copy of 1Password during the getting started process. If you already went through it and need to start over, follow this guide. Let us know if you have any questions. :)

That worked ... thanks heaps!
I wasnt presented with an iCloud option upon startup ... should I have? I'd rather it be in iCloud than local, does that mean I should have purchased from the App Store instead of the AgileBits store?

If you want to use iCloud, your license must come from Apple at their Mac App Store. Apple doesn't permit any applications they don't sell themselves to have access to the CloudKit technology used for syncing 1Password data. Dropbox works just as well and is just as secure, though. Perhaps someday Apple will open that up further, but not for the present.
If you want to initiate syncing, you do that under the Sync tab in 1Password preferences. You won't be asked to begin syncing. You have to opt for that yourself. BTW, if you use multiple vaults, or intend to in the future, iCloud isn't as good as Dropbox. iCloud will only sync the primary vault. Others must rely on some other way to sync, such as Dropbox.
And, finally, you will also always have local backups, regardless of the sync solution you pick. That's to save users from just the sort of thing that you encountered. You can't turn off local backups.

@Darren66 Great! Glad to hear things are up and running again. :) As hawkmoth noted, you'll need to have the Mac App Store version of 1Password to use iCloud sync. If you decide to purchase it, you can use this guide to switch your apps. Let us know how everything goes!
