Computer crashed, settings not backed up BUT I had a full data recovery

Hard drive crashed and I was issued a new computer. They were both MacBook Pros. I was able to recover 100% of my data off of my old hard drive and now have that all on an external hard drive.

Is there ANY way to use that hard drive to recover my previous settings? Or, would it be easiest for me at this point to start from scratch?

Thanks...

    Hello,

My hard drive crashed on my other Mac and now I have a new computer with no access to my other computer. How can I set up my 1 Password and get all of my passwords back?

What method of backup did you use for the old computer? Time Machine, perhaps

Were you syncing your data to iCloud or Dropbox?

    Hi @amndix,

I'm sorry to hear about the hard drive on your other Mac!

By default, all your 1Password data is stored locally on your Mac unless you choose to enable one of the sync options (Dropbox, Wi-Fi, etc), or if you have a backup saved somewhere else. Did you ever use a sync option in 1Password? Do you use 1Password on any other devices or computers, and if so, do they have your data? Or do you have a backup of your old Mac (such as a Time Machine backup, as hawkmoth mentioned)? If you've synced or backed up your data somewhere else, we should be able to help you get it back on your new computer.

I did not back up my data (will never do that again). So, it sounds like I am SOL. :-) Am I going to have to buy 1 Password again?

@amndix - Sorry to learn of the data loss. That's painful! It's no consolation now, but the old saying applies, "There are just two kinds of hard drives - those that have failed and those that will."

You definitely do not have to buy 1Password again. If you bought your license from AgileBits directly, you can just download a new copy form the Downloads page, and install the same license file you used originally. If you bought your license from Apple at the Mac App Store, just log in there with the same AppleID you used to buy your license and click on the Purchases tab. You should see 1Password listed there, and you can download it without an additional charge. In this case, there is no license to install; Apple controls licensing by tying your copy to the AppleID used to buy it.

Did you sync it to another device? This is my fear and my main reason I sync to Dropbox. At least I have a back up at all times (the fact I have 2 Macs, iPhone, and iPad should work as "back ups", but I have way too much now).

    Hi @amndix,

If you don't have any backups of your Mac or 1Password data, and never synced your 1Password data to a cloud sync service or another device, unfortunately it sounds like that data is gone (assuming it can't be recovered from the old hard drive). I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you about that!

The good news, as hawkmoth mentioned, is that you don't need to make a new purchase for 1Password. I found your license information in our system by searching for the email address from your forum account, and I've resent your that to your email. You'll need to download a copy of 1Password (see the link in hawkmoth's reply), and then you'll be able to apply your license file by clicking the appropriate link in the email.

If you need more help with that or anything else, just let us know - we're here for you! :)

Can you tell me how I can determine which version I used to have on my old computer?

As a first step just see if this knowledge base article helps at all:

Where does 1Password store its data?

That will help if your previous version was 1P4 or 1P5—but note the answer will differ depending on whether you bought 1P from the Mac App Store or the AgileBits store.

I think I recall buying it from the AgileBits store...but let me dive into my external hard drive and see what I can find out.

I see 1Password 4 2 and I also see 1Password 5, so I'm assuming that I ran an update at some point to download the most recent version available to me. I bought it from the AgileBits Store as well.

You should, then, be able to find your 1P files via the link in my previous post.

    Thanks Stephen,
I am, as many others might be, quite a novice at this sort of thing. Is there anywhere with simple steps that clearly and easily outline how to recover my data from this point? I've read your post...it details where information is held. And, I've found the data files on the hard drive!

Now, when I'm trying to log in as a previous user and trying to restore my data, I choose "This Mac" and find the files. From there I can find the most recent "back-up" file and then I click "open" I'm not noticing anything happen...

So, clearly I'm doing something wrong. Any further suggestions at this point?

    Hi @TontoKowalski,

At this point, I think it might be easiest to move this conversation to email. and while we are at it, I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac:

    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/mac.html

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Eva,
    Apologies...what does that mean?
The Mac that I am on is literally brand new. So, I'm not sure if a diagnostic report from this Mac will help.
If you can you tell me how or where I can find this report from my recovered data, I'm happy to send it along.
    Thanks

  • @TontoKowalski - thanks we have received your diagnostics reports and will reply to you via email.
