1Password 5 won't open on El Capitan

I recently paid to upgrade to 1Password 5 after using version 3 for years. At first the new version worked well, and I was happy, but then it stopped working; I cannot even open the app. Every time I try, it hangs for about a minute and then I get this error: "1Password failed to connect to 1Password mini." I am running OSX version 10.11.1 on a Retina Macbook Pro.

I had kept version 3 installed, and that continued to work, but I finally got tired of using the old version — seeing as I paid to upgrade, and I like the browser extensions. I have tried everything to get version 5 to work: I have uninstalled it, deleting everything except my vault using TrashMe; I removed all of my browser extensions; I even removed version 3, the only version that will open on my machine, in case it was causing a conflict.

Even after all of that, each time I reinstall 1 Password 5, I get the exact same error. Please help me. All of my passwords are in your app, and I need it on a daily basis.

My vault will open on my iPhone, thankfully, so I know it's not corrupt and I can access my passwords somehow.

Please try the suggestion in this AgileBits post. However, I'm not sure that's going to work because you said:

At first the new version worked well

If you still have a problem please do post again.

  • Hey @johnhamlin! Did the post that Stephen linked to help you out with this? If not, could you let us know what you may have done before the new version stopped working correctly? With El Capitan, there has been an issue with the app can quickly be fixed by following the instructions Stephen linked to — you only have to do this once. If there's something else going on, please let us know.
