Tried every recommended step several times (restarting, reinstalling, etc) Will not open, always get error above. I am running El Capitan. Have downloaded 1Password 5 from your site many times and reinstalled after completely deleting all related files from the computer with App Cleaner, a late model MacBook Pro.

I'm unclear whether, among the things you tried, you tried the suggestion in this AgileBits post. If not, please try it. If on the other hand you had already tried it please post again and confirm it does not help.

Hi, I just followed the instructions on the post. Does not help at all. Same cannot connect with mini error. (BTW, I have 1Password running on my desktop with the same system, works fine. Same version, same OS)

    Hello @smcutler,

Can I just confirm, 1Password relies on something called launchd and combined with sandboxing means it can be sensitive to where it is stored. Multiple copies being accessible can cause trouble as well as where it's being stored. If you have a single copy of 1Password in your /Applications/ folder and no other copy elsewhere then we need to consider other causes. Can you say if this is the case? Spotlight can be good for seeing if multiple copies are accessible. Obviously we'll keep working with you to discover the cause and get it fixed.

I am having the exact same issue. Ever since the OS X El Capitan update I am unable to open 1Password and continue to get the Failed to connect to 1Password mini error. Restarting etc has not worked thus far.

Brian, problem solved! I thought I had deleted every 1password app and file, but turns out there was mobile IPA on the hard drive, and sure enough that was the culprit. I downloaded a fresh app and Safari extension and it's fine. Thank you and Stephan and the team for your help.

  • @smcutler Glad to hear you were able to resolve it by removing that extra copy. They sneak in there sometimes.

Have you looked for additional copies of 1Password on your computer? It's also a good idea to give this article a read and see if anything there helps. If not, let us know!
