How can I recover my 1Password data from my mac time machine back up ?

I was using 1Password with my iMac running the Lion operating system. My iPhone 6 also has your 1Password App but I was never able to sync it with my computer. I think the reason being that Lion was causing problems being old. So I had all my passwords on my desktop and only put a few passwords manually in my iPhone since it never synced. Now I upgraded to the new El Capitan operating system. 1Password was working right away and synced my iPhone with my computer right away. The big problem is that it synced the data on my iPhone to my computer and not the other way around and now all my passwords on my computer are gone. Before updating to El Capitan I made a time machine backup and am hoping now that you can help me recover my passwords from that backup.

1Password Version: 5.4
Extension Version: 4.4.4
OS Version: 10.11.1
Sync Type: Wifi

  • Hey @aihrt! Glad you got things updated, but I'm sorry your 1Password data didn't get synced properly when you got the app set up on El Capitan. If you have a Time Machine backup of things, that makes restoring from a backup nice and easy. Here's what you need to do:

First, copy the following to your clipboard, depending on which version of 1Password you were using:

    Mac App Store version: ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Library/Backups/
    AgileBits Store Version: ~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Backups/

Then follow these steps to restore your backup using Time Machine:

    1. Open Time Machine from your Applications folder in Finder
    2. Press ⌘ Shift G on your keyboard
    3. Paste ( ⌘ V ) the path you copied in the first step and click Go
    4. Find the most recent backup, select it, and click Restore in Time Machine's interface

Once that backup is on your computer, you can restore it by opening 1Password, clicking 1Password in the menu bar, and selecting Restore. Select the backup from the list and click Restore. Confirm by pressing Restore once again.

Let us know how that goes! :)

    Hi @aihrt,

I'm sorry you weren't able to find your backups! While reading your original message, I noticed you said your Mac was previously running OS X 10.7 (Lion), which means you must have been using 1Password 3 before upgrading to El Capitan. Version 3 stored its data and backup files in a slightly different location than versions 4 and 5. The locations in the above steps are for versions 4 and 5, so that probably explains why you didn't find anything there in Time Machine.

Please try these steps to check Time Machine for your 1Password 3 backups:

First, copy one of the following file paths to the clipboard, depending on which version of 1Password you were using on Lion:

    Mac App Store version:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.agilebits.onepassword-osx/Data/Library/Application Support/1Password/Backups/

    AgileBits Store version:
    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/Backups/

Next, follow these steps to find your backup files in Time Machine:

    • Open Time Machine from the Applications folder
    • Use the up/down arrows next to the open window in Time Machine to go back to the date that should have the backups
    • Press ⌘⇧G ( Command+Shift+G ) on your keyboard to see the "Go to the folder" prompt
    • Press ⌘V ( Command+V ) to paste the file path you copied above, then click Go
    • Find the most recent backup file, select it, and click Restore
    • Copy that restored backup file to the Desktop

Once you have a copy of the 1Password 3 backup file, you can use use it to restore your data in 1Password 5 by following these steps:

    • Rename the backup file to: 1Password.agilekeychain.zip
    • Double-click that file to unzip it, and it will now be named 1Password.agilekeychain
    • Open 1Password 5 and unlock it with your master password (if prompted)
    • Go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences, then select the Sync tab
    • Change the sync setting from Dropbox to Folder, then click Disable Sync (do not delete the data from Dropbox)
    • Click the Choose button, then select the 1Password.agilekeychain file from above (then click Open)
    • Click Merge with Existing to start syncing (enter your master password if prompted)

Assuming that works as described, you'll need to remember to switch the sync setting from Folder back to Dropbox, and merge with the keychain file in your Dropbox folder.

Please let us know how that all goes! If you run into any trouble, just describe exactly what happens and we'll continue from there. Thanks! :)

Thank you Drew, unfortunately there was no backup file there. Just an attachment cache that was empty. Does it mean there was no backup? Thank you.

    Hi @aihrt,

Just to make sure I understand - if you enter Time Machine, you're able to navigate to ~/Library/Containers/com.agilebits.onepassword-osx/Data/Library/Application Support/1Password/, but there is no Backups folder there? Did you go back to a date before you upgraded to El Capitan?

That file path is for the Mac App Store version of 1Password 3. Is there any chance you had been using the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 3 instead? You can try navigating to ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ in Time Machine to see if it's there. If you can find that 1Password folder, check to see if there is a Backups folder inside.

If you had been using the Mac App Store version of 1Password 3 on OS X Lion, and installed the update to 1Password 5 from the Mac App Store after upgrading to El Capitan, that would have replaced the version 3 app with the version 5 app. However, if you had been using the AgileBits Store version of 1Password 3 on Lion, that version would not have been replaced when you installed 1Password 5. In that case, you may still have the 1Password 3 app on your Mac (likely in the Applications folder), and if so, it should still have your data.

You can also try looking in Time Machine for the main data file used by 1Password 3, instead of the backup files. The default location of the 1Password 3 data file should be in one of these locations:

1Password 3 data file (Mac App Store version):
    ~/Library/Containers/com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Documents/1Password.agilekeychain

1Password 3 data file (AgileBits Store version):
    ~/Library/Application Support/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

I should mention that's the default location. If you had set up Dropbox sync in 1Password 3 for Mac, the .agilekeychain file would have been in your Dropbox folder instead. It was also possible to move that keychain file to another location on your Mac.

Let us know how it all goes!

Hi Drew, yes I was able to navigate there but found no backup folder and yes I did go back in a date before I upgraded to El Capitan in Time Machine. i did find the link to the main data file if this is it. But what do I do now? Is there hope?
1Password 3 data file (Mac App Store version):
    ~/Library/Containers/com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/Documents/1Password.agilekeychain

I just saw that there is a 1Password folder in my drop box. I remember trying to sync 1Password with my iPhone and the old lion software but it never worked so I hope it will be the backup from the computer and not from the phone. How can I add the folder from my drop box to my new 1Password in El Capitan?

Yeah, just solved the problem, had a backup on my dropbox that I forgot about. This time I will check if Time Machine will back it up for future use. Thank you for your help.
