Problem Setting Up Wi-Fi Sync

I am trying to set up 1Password using Wi-Fi Sync. When I go to "Wi-Fi Server" in Preferences, the checkbox is greyed out and under it says "Unlock the Primary vault to edit Wi-Fi Server settings." I cannot find a place to unlock the vault.

  • Hi @meancody,

If you go to the Window menu and select "1Password" it should bring up the main vault window that has a password field, or alternatively the setup window in the event that you haven't completed the initial setup. Once you're setup and you unlock the vault these preferences should become available to you.

I hope this helps. Let us know how it works out.

I use 1Password on my phone, so I selected "I've used 1Password before" and selected "Another device". This gives me the options Cancel and More Information. More information sends me to this link (https://support.1password.com/guides/mac/new-computer.html) with instructions on how to use Wi-Fi Sync, but there is no information on how to unlock the vault.

    Hi @meancody,

In the user guide article you linked to, at the very bottom under the "Another computer or device" section, you'll see this link: Wi-Fi Sync existing data

That will take you to the instructions you'll need to follow to sync your data from your iPhone to your Mac via Wi-Fi the first time. Have you followed those steps? If so, you should have been able to create a new, empty vault in 1Password on your Mac. You would also have created a master password for that vault on your Mac (we recommend choosing the same one you use for 1Password on your iPhone).

If you've done all that, you should be asked to unlock it with your master password when you open the 1Password app on your Mac. You won't find that in the Preferences window, so to avoid confusion, quit the 1Password app. When you open 1Password again, you should see the main 1Password window, and it should be asking you to enter your master password. Once you unlock it with your master password, you can go back to the Preferences and turn on the Wi-Fi Server.

On the other hand, if you went through all the steps to set up a new, empty vault and choose your master password, but you aren't asked to enter your master password when you open the 1Password app, what exactly do you see when you open it?

That worked. Thank you SO MUCH!

  • @meancody On behalf of Drew, you are most welcome! Glad to hear you two sorted this out. :) If you have any other questions, we're just a few keystrokes away.
