@andreas_hilbrich: A 1Password 5 license also includes a key for 1Password 3, so that's probably the best option. However, if you're trying to sync with newer versions on other devices you may run into some issues since the old version doesn't know about some newer features. If you can tell me the OS and 1Password versions you're using on all devices I'll be able to give better advice. Thanks in advance! :)

@brenty, thanks for your advice. on my other pc i use 1Password 5.4 on OS X Yosemite (10.10.5).

Thanks for letting us know! Sorry for any confusion, but if your Mac is running OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion), you can actually use 1Password 4. You'll definitely be able to sync your vault(s) between versions 5 and 4 using Dropbox sync.
Did you purchase the Mac App Store or AgileBits Store version of 1Password for Mac? If you bought it from the Mac App Store, just launch the Mac App Store on your Mac with Mountain Lion, make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to make the purchase, and install 1Password from the Purchased tab. It should ask if you want to install the latest version of 1Password that is supported by that version of OS X (i.e. 1Password 4).
On the other hand, if you bought a license for 1Password 5 for Mac from the AgileBits Store, you can use the same license file to activate version 4. You can download 1Password 4 for Mac from the "Legacy" section at the bottom of our download site.
Hopefully this helps, but please let us know if you have any trouble with that, or if you have more questions. Thanks! :)

Thanks @Drew_AG for your answer! On our private PC (running with mountain lion) we actually did not purchase any 1Password license. My question was just for a presales-information ;-)
In Mac App Store i got an information like "Sorry, this version is not compatible with your installed OS X". I think, i'll test the scenario you described and go to buy my license at agile bits store.
Regards, Andreas

Thanks for the clarification! As you discovered, it's not possible to make a new purchase of 1Password 4 from the Mac App Store. However, if you purchase 1Password 5 from the Mac App Store on a Mac running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or 10.11 (El Capitan) first, and then try to install it from the "Purchased" tab of the Mac App Store on OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion), you should be given the option to install 1Password 4.
Or, like you said, you can purchase a license from the AgileBits Store instead, and download 1Password 4 from the "Legacy" section at the bottom of our download site.
Sorry again for any confusion about that! Please let us know if you need more help with that or anything else. :)
