Thank you

    Hi @SamM,

I have just the guide to help you out!

How do I upgrade 1Password for Mac from version 3?

You'll want to upgrade to El Capitan between steps 2 and 3. So you'll uninstall 1Password 3, upgrade your OS, and then install 1Password 5. Once installed, 1Password 5 should recognize your existing data from version 3. (Note: uninstalling the app does not delete your data, which is stored separately.)

Version 4/5 is a paid upgrade from version 3, but you can get a great discount by entering your v3 license key in our upgrade store.

Let us know if you have any other questions for us. We're here to help! :)

    Vee,
Thank you for your response. I'm just a little concerned about deleting 1Password from the MacBook Air even you state the data is kept separately.

    Hi @SamM,

That's completely understandable - it does seem a little scary to delete the old 1Password app if you haven't installed the new one yet! It's a good thing to be concerned about the safely of your important data. Just to reiterate what Vee explained, the 1Password.app file is just the app (the same exact software that can be downloaded from our website). Your 1Password data is stored somewhere else on your Mac, so as long as the only thing you move to the Trash is the app file, your 1Password data will be fine (just make sure you don't use any app cleaning utilities).

However, if you don't want to delete the 1Password 3 app just yet, that's fine - our instructions say to do that in order to avoid a possible (and somewhat rare) conflict that might happen between 1Password 3 and 1Password 5. But even if that happens, it won't be a major problem for you, and your data will still transfer to 1Password 5.

So, if you feel better leaving the 1Password 3 app installed when you upgrade your Mac to El Capitan, no problem. As always, it's a good idea to backup your Mac somewhere (like Time Machine) before upgrading the operating system. If you've already backed up your Mac, then you can go ahead and install El Capitan. After El Capitan is set up, you can install 1Password 5. The first time you open it, it should find your data from 1Password 3. If it all works as expected and you have all your data in 1Password 5, you can go ahead and delete the version 3 app.

Please let us know how it goes and if you have any questions about that. :)
