1Password 5.4 on OS X 10.11.1

I just did a clean install of OS X 10.11.1 on an iMac. My keychain is in Dropbox. When I go to open 1Password for the first time I point it toward the dropbox folder where my keychain is but I get the following error message. "Failed to unlock. Cannot load keychain profile"

Any suggestions ?

1Password Version: 5.4
Extension Version: Not Provided
OS Version: 10.11.1
Sync Type: Dropbox

The first point to check is that Dropbox has actually finished its sync. Are you sure that is the case?

  • Hey @MLCharnley! Stephen's recommendation is a great place to start. Can you check to make sure Dropbox is running and has finished syncing? Let us know what things look like.

I am at my office computer running Yosemite where Dropbox has been synced for several weeks. I downloaded 1Password5.4 and tried to install it. I get the same message that I got at home. "Failed to unlock. Cannot load keychain profile" Does that indicate that my keychain in Dropbox is corrupted ?

  • @MLCharnley It sounds like things may not be synced to Dropbox properly. To fix this, you'll need to disable and re-enable sync on the computer that has all your data (which I'm assuming is your office one) and then add the vault from Dropbox on your recently set up iMac. So, first let's go through disabling sync. This process will simply remove the data from your Dropbox account, not from your computer.

    1. Launch 1Password, click the 1Password menu in the menu bar, and select Preferences
    2. Switch to the Sync tab
    3. Select the vault you're syncing with Dropbox (it'll have a little box icon beside it)
    4. Click the dropdown menu beside Sync vault with and select None
    5. Check the Delete data from Dropbox box and confirm by clicking Disable Sync
    6. Give your computer a few minutes to delete things, then check your Dropbox folder to make sure the 1Password data is no longer there
    7. Enable sync once again by navigating back to the Sync tab, selecting the vault, and clicking Choose
    8. Select a folder you prefer within Dropbox and click Open to confirm your selection

Once that's all set up, give Dropbox a few minutes to sync your data and head over to your iMac. Check the Dropbox account there to make sure the .agilekeychain or .opvault file is synced to Dropbox. Follow this guide to start over with an empty vault on that computer, then follow this guide to add the vault from Dropbox during setup:

    Sync existing Dropbox data

That should get everything up and running smoothly. Let us know if you have any questions. :)

The vaults are empty on both my home as well as my office computer ?

Is it possible that 1Password.agilekeychain has become corrupted ?

  • @MLCharnley Okay that's rather strange. If they're empty, do you have anything in 1Password? Are there any items in the main window?

I am not certain what you mean by the main window ?

Keep in mind that on my home computer I did a clean install of OS X 10.11.1 and then Dropbox and 1Password. On my office machine OS X 10.10.5 and Dropbox have been running for several weeks but I only downloaded and tried to install 1Password this morning.

  • @MLCharnley To figure out exactly what's going on, could you reboot your main computer (which I'm assuming is your office one) and then create a Diagnostics Report?

Attach the Diagnostics Report to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report and ensure that it is dealt with quickly. :) We'll take a look at it and let you know what we find.

I think my problem was a corrupted Dropbox file or folder. When I got home last night I deleted the 1Password folder from Dropbox and replaced it with a backup folder. On my office computer this morning I am able to open 1Password from the (new) keychain on Dropbox. Does that make sense ?

  • @MLCharnley Yep, that sounds about right. I just wanted to double-check things with a Diagnostic Report before I recommended deleting the 1Password folder from Dropbox. Is everything up and running properly now? All the items intact? :+1:

Everything seems to be as it was so I think I am okay. I will check more thoroughly when I am at home.

I just wanted to add that, because sync is generally such an awesome thing, it's easy to forget about the Dark Side: damaged or deleted data will sync along with everything else, so problems like this can make their way from one device to the others. And that's why it's so important to have backups of your data — and why 1Password for Mac (and Windows) do this automatically. Cheers! :)
