I'm interested in the response to this as well.

In order to use iCloud, your copy must come from the Mac App Store. That's Apple's policy, and there is no way for any developer to transfer licenses to the Mac App Store.

If you bought from the AgileBits web store within the past 30 days, they will issue a refund and you can then purchase a new copy from the Mac App Store. If you're outside that 30 day money-back window and iCloud is important enough to you to justify the cost, the only option you have is to buy another copy from Apple.

If you're in the refund window, send email requesting a refund to support+licenses@agilebits.com. Include the email address your used when you bought the license, and your name and address as you gave them.

Hey @krishooper! Did hawkmoth's answer help you with this? It's spot on. I checked for a license associated with your email address and it looks like it's much older than 30 days, so you'll either need to purchase from the Mac App Store or continue to use the AgileBits Store version. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Yes, I purchased my license more than 30 days ago. However, I'm now working in an environment where running Dropbox is frowned upon, hence the timing of the request.

I thought I'd inquire as Panic had a similar scenario with Coda a few years ago, and users were able to migrate from MAS to the Panic store version.

Thanks for the responses! I'm afraid I simply can't justify another $60 for a different version of the exact same software...

The thing is that it is possible to migrate FROM the App Store version to the AgileBits version, as the latter is under the control of AgileBits.

But it is NOT possible to migrate TO the App Store version from the AgileBits version, as that would require Apple to cooperate.

According to AgileBits own documentation it is in fact possible, provided the user navigate around the licensing issue by purchasing both variants:
    https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac-kb/5/en/topic/switching-to-mas

...Or, as stated above, if the merge happens within 30 days of purchase. Presumably, AgileBits overcomes the licensing hurdles in that case.

I appreciate that I'm stating what everyone already knows... but would like to make a case for how utterly confusing this is after the fact.
(And I don't think it's quite right to point the finger at Apple here, as it is well understood how basic purchasing on the MAS works. Whether or not one agrees with how it works, it is nonetheless the ubiquitous experience here.)

For example, take a look at the AgileBits tool provided to help users navigate all this:
    https://agilebits.com/store/choose

I would argue that it is as helpful and friendly as you'd expect from AgileBits... and also fails to explain the iCloud issue in full. It's glossed over. Now that is probably because the issue is confusing, sure... but therein lies the point!

I'll rest my case if we can agree that this is unnecessarily confusing! ;)

Now that's interesting, and shows a place where AgileBits have got the website design wrong.

If you go to the AgileBits store you do get specifically told that iCloud sync is only available from the App Store, though people often miss this.

You can't get to the Choose page you mention without first being on the main site where the info about iCloud sync is given. But I can see that the Choose link makes it even easier to miss that fact.

My own view is that it needs to be stated in several places. In particular I would like an "Are you sure? This version does not allow iCloud sync" dialog and "Continue. Cancel" buttons at the checkout.

@krishooper Thanks for giving us some background.

Yes, I purchased my license more than 30 days ago. However, I'm now working in an environment where running Dropbox is frowned upon, hence the timing of the request.

Ah, well that makes sense then. Unfortunately it's not possible to sync with iCloud in the AgileBits Store version of 1Password.

According to AgileBits own documentation it is in fact possible, provided the user navigate around the licensing issue by purchasing both variants:

    https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac-kb/5/en/topic/switching-to-mas

I'm so sorry this documentation was confusing. In the notes at the top, you'll notice we mention you need a copy of 1Password from the Mac App Store to follow the guide:

    • You must own a copy of 1Password from the Mac App Store. There is no way to transfer a web store license to the Mac App Store.

    Does that sound appropriate?

...Or, as stated above, if the merge happens within 30 days of purchase. Presumably, AgileBits overcomes the licensing hurdles in that case.

Well, we don't necessarily overcome them, we just issue a refund for the purchase you made through the AgileBits Store. Usually people let us know pretty quickly if they purchased the wrong version. In your case, the situation has changed a bit. We may be able to do something if you send us an email at support+forums@agilebits.com with a link to this thread. We'll try our best to help you find a better solution to the Dropbox-sync-at-work issue.

For example, take a look at the AgileBits tool provided to help users navigate all this: https://agilebits.com/store/choose

Thanks for pointing out the inconsistency on this page. I've let our developers know about that so we can get things updated.

I would argue that it is as helpful and friendly as you'd expect from AgileBits... and also fails to explain the iCloud issue in full. It's glossed over. Now that is probably because the issue is confusing, sure... but therein lies the point!

I'm so sorry you feel that's the case — we definitely don't want to gloss over it. What particular questions do you have about iCloud syncing with the AgileBits Store version of the app? This blog post may be of some help answering the more technical side of why the Mac App Store version is the only one that can sync with iCloud at the moment. If it doesn't explain things, please let us know what questions you have. :) We're happy to answer them.

For the record, I recall noting the iCloud distinction being made during purchasing. I'm tech savvy, and I work with this stuff all day. I "got it" as much as anyone is going to before they've actually used the app itself.

It's on me, and I'm cool with that.

But then you use the app and figure out what features you use. Maybe you then buy another copy for another platform. Now the syncing issue comes into focus because you're using the tool as a tool.

See what I mean? It's a wrinkle in the experience.

Anyway, I'll leave it there. Thanks for the responses. All appreciated. No further questions.

  • @krishooper Thanks for getting back to us. It's good to hear that you did see the caveat about iCloud during your purchase - that means our web design team did their job here.

And I can certainly understand how your needs for the software change over time. As I mentioned previously, we'd be more than happy to look into options for working around the no-Dropbox-at-work scenario. For example: if you have 1Password on your iOS devices, we could set up Wi-Fi Sync between your iOS device and your Mac to ensure that your data stays updated.

If you'd like to explore this issue further, please provide us the version details of each of the devices that you use 1Password on (both OS version and app version, please). We'd love to work with you to find a solution!
