Upgrading to the Mac App Store version of 1Password

Hey.

I've read that I can't transfer my licence from the AgileBits Store to the Mac App Store version. Does that also apply to upgrades as well? If I wanted to upgrade from the Agile Bits Store version of 1Password 3 to the Mac App Store version of iPassword 5, would you be able to do that somehow, or do I need to purchase the Mac App Store version at full cost?

Karl.

    Hi @karl_botragyi,

Unfortunately Apple doesn't provide a way to convert a license for the AgileBits Store version of 1Password to the Mac App Store version. So if you wanted the Mac App Store version of 1Password, you would need to purchase that separately. Also, Apple does not give us the ability to do upgrade pricing on the App Store, so you would need pay the full price shown there. We're only able to give upgrade discounts for purchases made on our own AgileBits Store.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you about that! Was there a particular reason you wanted the Mac App Store version of 1Password instead of the AgileBits Store version? If you decide to upgrade your license from the AgileBits Store, you can visit this page and enter your license code to see your upgrade discount and license options. Please let us know if you have more questions about that, thanks! :)

So, since I was stupid enough to purchase version 3.xx of 1Password and now wants to upgrade so I can use iCloud sync you're telling me I can't? What kind of trickery is this? Either give me my discount so I can sync via iCloud or give me my money back! This is the worst kind of trickery I've ever witnessed! If this is so I'm never using 1Password ever again and I'll let everyone I know hear about this. Thanks for nothing.

@MSglol - If there is any trickery, it's on Apple's part, not AgileBits. As Drew_AG explained, Apple made a decision that only applications sold from one of their App Stores can have access to the required protocols to sync with iCloud. Further, Apple provides no way for developers to transfer licenses to the Mac App Store, and they don't provide for discounted upgrade pricing either. It's easy to understand your disappointment, but it's misdirected towards AgileBits. They are disappointed by this state of affairs too.

No, you are wrong: I just need to be able to sync via iCloud. If you can't give discount on the App Store, then give me a discounted version outside the App Store. I was told I could upgrade my license in the future if I needed, and now I need to upgrade but you're not letting me - don't blame this on Apple, I blame you 100% and if this is not solved right away I'm leaving 1Password and go back to the system I used prior to 1Password. Thanks for nothing again.

All I need is a way to sync via iCloud and since this is impossible I don't know what else to do.

Just to clarify, I am not an AgileBits employee. I'm a volunteer helper in the forum. But I do know what I'm talking about with respect to Apple's restrictions on developers.

    Hi @MSglol,

While I may be a member of the AgileBits team, like most I started off life as just a customer, specifically a 1Password 3 user like yourself. When it came time to upgrade from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4 there were two options, the same two options that all of our customers have right now.

    1. If I purchased through the AgileBits Store I knew I could use my existing licence key to get a discount. This is still true today as it has always been. You can use your 1Password 3 licence key on our Upgrades for Existing Licence Owners page for a sizeable discount over the normal price. We can do this because it's our store. At the time 1Password 4 could sync to iCloud but I did read that it wasn't given that it would always work.
    2. If I purchased through Apple's Mac App Store I realised it meant paying full price as there is no functionality for offering a selective discount of any kind, including a free copy. Apple allow us to set a single price and that's it. On top of that there was the real possibility that with the next paid version after that I would have to pay full price again while AgileBits Store customers would likely receive a discounted upgrade price again.

When Apple introduced iCloud Drive a lot changed. We had a number of users unhappy about the loss of iCloud Sync, specifically the old iCloud Sync. The new iCloud Sync relies on the CloudKit framework, part of iCloud Drive and only apps or applications obtained from one of Apple's stores can access it. For those users who deemed iCloud as the only available option there is only one choice and it meant repurchasing 1Password from the Mac App Store. No matter which version of 1Password for Mac you own though, Dropbox and Wi-Fi/Folder Sync are options available to all of our users.

We don't like the idea of there existing a sync option that is available to only one version but that is the current state of affairs. Any change will have to involve not just us but Apple and there may, and I do stress may, be something in the future that could be used there but that is most certainly in the future and depends on a number of factors. If iCloud Sync now is a must the only option is to purchase a copy at full price from the Mac App Store.

Every so often we do have sales and the sale prices applies equally to the Mac App Store as to does our own. We announce these sales on both Twitter and Facebook. We don't get advanced warning so I don't know when the next may be.
