how do i apply a family license to my desktop 1password account

I have a license number, but the email was sent to my son and although he sent me a copy, it does not have a link to click on to apply the license. It only indicates "register" and a download link, which is not what I need. Where do I go to apply the license to my desktop copy, which I recently upgraded the Mac OS on, and so was able to install the update. ??????

Thanks

Holly Johnston

I'm a little confused. You say you have a license number, but the last time a key code like that was used for registering 1Password was version 3. Since the release of version 4, there is a license file that needs to be installed to validate the license. The simplest way to do that is to click on the link in the usual message that acknowledges your purchase that indicates you should click on it to install the license. You do need to have 1Password open to make that work.

Your reference to a family license also makes me wonder if the license you have is for version 3. The family license was discontinued when Yosemite was released, and now a single user license covers up to six family member in the same household. But the upgrade from version 3 to version 4 required an upgrade payment. Version 5 is a free upgrade for licensed users of version 4, though.

The message I get when I ask for my license to be resent looks like this. Note the link to click to install the license, also note that an aphanumeric code for version 3 is also included for those users who need the legacy version.

Discounted upgrade pricing is available on the AgileBits web store (but not the Mac App Store). To see the cost, you would enter that license key on the upgrade page, here.

Anyway, it would appear to me that the message your son sent you is associated with version 3, not the version you have installed. Is that a possibility? If I've misunderstood, please clarify your situation. Let us know either way.

  • Hey @holly_johnston! I just checked for a license associated with the email address you used to sign up on these forums, and found that you have one for 1Password 2. You've been using 1Password since 2008. First off, many thanks are in order. We're so glad you started using our app back in the good old days!

Now, what hawkmoth said is true: 1Password 5 is a paid upgrade for 1Password users who purchased a license before 2013. The great news is, you can get a new one at a discounted rate. :) It sounds like you already have the latest version of the app, so just head to our upgrade page to grab a license for the new version as well. You can use this license for up to six members of the same household, which is perfect for your situation as well. If you have any questions, feel free to let us know.
