Special characters - password generator

This really relates to all products not just windows ... some websites ask for passwords consisting of only some special characters.
It would be good to be able to configure the password generator which special characters/symbols it can use ...

    Hi @mtissington,

We have some ideas on how to handle this in the future but for now, you can edit the generated password in the password generator to include these symbols yourself and 1Password will save/fill it for you.

Agreed. Control of which Special Characters are available is required BUT you also need to allow each entry to have their own password policy that is saved along with everything related to that item. Obviously a system default needs to be one option but each entry needs to have the ability to have their own Custom Policy. Manually editing the generated password might work for free software. For software sold as a Password Manager the password policy options are pretty lame.

  • Hi @jf1026,

Thanks for your feedback on this.

The ability to retain the password generator settings per item is something we'd like to add in the future.

Regrettably, in this age of increasing awareness of security, I am astounded by the limitations websites place on password length and complexity. Really ? Banks requiring 8 characters or LESS for Quicken Direct-Connect ? Unbelievable.

For example, I have just been through password-reset-hell with IRS.gov and the latest version of Sonicwall firmware, which BOTH limit the use of special characters to the following ( there is a pattern forming here; is there some kind of conspiracy to eliminate special characters not found on numeric keys ?! ):

    "!"
    "@"
    "#"
    "$"
    "%"
    "^"
    "&"
    ","
    "*"
    "("
    ")"

While I don't presume to know what constraints AgileBits might face in implementing some kind of configurability here, it stands to reason that one very straightforward option might be to include a listbox of special characters, with multiple selection enabled, where such a list is ordered in a logical way ( symbols on number keys, vs. symbols on other keys, or something like that ), where the user can select ( or de-select ) which special characters should be considered IN THE PASSWORD GENERATOR WINDOW. Version One of this solution need NOT be complicated by the idea that some Policy must govern a global configuration, or that a particular Policy/Configuration should be remembered by item -- site policies are changing, so why bother remembering their policy at all ?

  • Thank you for this feedback, @ABWC,

We've been going through similar discussions and your thoughts on this are much appreciated.
You also have to factor in complexity and the chance of reducing he strength of passwords when not necessary.

In any case: I've added your feedback to our list.
