Looking for 1Password Helper [Use the 1Password 6 Beta Desktop version]

The win10 machine had the 1password extension automatically added when I logged into my Chrome acct. I'm wondering if there's actually a 1password helper as the Windows 10 beta app install didn't ask me about running the helper like the mac install did.

when i click the extension icon in the chrome tool bar I get a new tab that says it can't find the helper.

1Password Version: 1password beta 2016.2.1500
Extension Version: 4.5.4.4
OS Version: windows 10 ver 1511
Sync Type: team
Referrer: kb:configure-kaspersky, kb:disable-browser-password-manager, kb:install-browser-extension

    Hello @gwholtslander,

The Windows 10 Beta does not currently support browser extensions so it will not be able to use the helper in chrome. But, you can use OneBrowser to automatically login to your accounts! Just select the item you'd like to login to, the click this button:

The app will then launch a new window with a browser with your login and password filled :)

Yes, that was my suspicion. Thanks for that. I'll use the Browse button instead.

    Much appreciated!

Just to clarify, @gwholtslander, you need to have 1Password 4 for Windows installed to get the Helper. You can have both 1Password 4 for Windows and the beta app you downloaded from the Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 device installed and running at the same time, but the Helper will be communicating with 1Password 4 for Windows, not with the beta app.

If you use Dropbox or folder sync to share a vault in both programs, note that changes you make in 1Password 4 for Windows will need to be "re-read" into the beta app (which should happen on launch and can also be triggered from within the beta app).

Ok, I have that, but it wants me to have a vault saved somewhere. I'm using the Team beta stuff on my mac at home and it doesn't ask me about vaults etc. What am I missing in the translation from Mac to Win10?

    Hey @gwholtslander,

I'm a little unsure of what you're referring to. Can you help me understand by telling me:

    • What exactly the message says?
    • When exactly do you see the message?

Ok, I use a Mac at home and a Win10 machine at the office. My son and I are trying out the Team beta for our company so we are both using a shared group of passwords as well. When I interact with 1Password at home on the Mac, our password groups seem to live in the cloud somewhere and we haven't been required to save them to a location of our choosing, like Dropbox etc. Perhaps that's because we haven't done a backup? Not sure about that.

However, when I set up my 1Password on my computer at the my office on Win10, the Win10 beta worked, but the Chrome extension wouldn't because that's not built yet in the beta. So, I downloaded 1Password 4 as per @DBrown recommendation. However, it want's a vault location which I don't have to give.

Does that help explain the situation or just kick up more mud in the water?

@gwholtslander, I didn't realize you were using a vault stored in a 1Password for Teams account, so I apologize for the confusion I may have caused.

It's still true that you need to be working with 1Password 4 for Windows if you want to use the browser extensions, but 1Password 4 for Windows does not yet include the ability to work with vaults stored in 1Password for Teams or 1Password for Families accounts.

So, to use your Teams vault on a Windows 10 device, you'll need to use the 1Password beta app that you downloaded from the Store on your Windows 10 device.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Ah I see, but still not a problem! We also develop software, so I totally get how it takes time to have everything talk to everything! Thanks!

Thanks so much for understanding, @gwholtslander, and for using 1Password!

(I should've mentioned that you can also use the web UI to your 1Password for Teams account.)

Apologies for reviving a dead thread, but does this mean that (now, in April) it isn't possible for 1Password for teams users on Windows to use the Chrome extension to auto-fill password from the team vault?

@jmap: That's correct. The 1Password for Windows desktop app (which the extensions integrate with via the Helper) does not yet support 1Password Teams/Families. We're working on a new version, but it isn't ready yet. As mentioned previously, the 1Password for Windows 10 beta app cannot integrate with separate browsers (though it's something we hope to be able to do in the future), but it has a built-in Edge web view (the "globe" icon in the item details) for filling in the mean time.

just installed the Chrome extension and receive this error message when trying to use:

    Looking for the 1Password helper

The 1Password helper must be running for the extension to work properly.

Chart5050 didn't give the following info: 1Password version - Teams, Extension Version - Beta, Windows 10, Chrome for Windows 10.

@Chart5050: I hope you don't mind, but I've merged your posts with the existing discussion.

Currently only the 1Password for Windows desktop app is able to integrate with external browsers (using its Helper); the 1Password for Windows 10 beta app cannot, but you can use the built-in browser to fill logins (the "globe" icon in the item details).

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

yes that was helpful. I didn't realize for what the "Browse" button with a globe picture in the lower right hand corner of the 1Password app was used for. thanks

Is there an ETA for when browser extensions and the Windows 10 beta might be supported? We're in the process of rolling out the 1password for teams in our company - our support and marketing folks are on Windows boxes, and I'd love for them to have the same seamless experience available to our Mac-using team members. :)

    Hi @chrispatterson,

We don't release any details including ETAs until it is already to be published, so by the time we'd share a timeframe, it'd be out in public betas already.

At the moment, both 1Password Teams and 1Password for Windows 10 are beta products, I wouldn't recommend rolling this out until both products are released first.

We will be releasing more information on the Windows development status fairly soon.

@MikeT For our purposes (and current headcount), the current beta state is sufficient for us to roll out access, but we're definitely looking forward to the full release.

Look forward to the updates. :+1:

    Ok, sounds good.

Our team can't wait either, we're working on a few core things we want to finish soon, so we can get back to the normal update schedule.

The current 1Password app in the Windows store is 1Password 6.0.161u. Is this still considered a Beta app? Does this yet support browser extensions?

    Thanks!

  • Hi @cajunnan,

Yes, it is still a beta. Due to how the Windows Store handles versioning scheme and app names, we had to ship a different app with a new name and start using the 6.x.x versioning scheme instead of what we had before. So, we couldn't easily reuse 1Password Beta and decided to go with 1Password instead. We did say it is a beta in the description but I think we need to do more and make it stand out.

As for browser extensions, this has been initially implemented in the desktop beta already and we're using the desktop program first to test our implementation and we hope to add it to the Windows Store app later. We've released more details on our blog post here: https://blog.agilebits.com/2016/06/02/1password-6-beta-for-windows-opens-the-door-to-1password-families-and-1Password-teams/

If you want to use browser extensions, please switch to the Beta version of our desktop program instead: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/64591/help-us-welcome-1password-6-to-our-windows-family/p1?new=1

You AgileBits update this post for Oct 2016? I am running 6.0.161u on Windows 10 and I can not connect the Chrome Extention to 1Password. I see the 'Looking for the 1Password helper' but it never connects. I don't see anything related to "1Password helper" in the current non-beta version from the Microsoft Store.

  • Hi @hlclark78,

    Thanks for writing in..

There is no support for browser extensions yet with the Windows Store version of 1Password 6. You have to switch over to our desktop version from here to get that support, we've been supporting the extensions there for a few months now.
