Setting up an existing Vault on a new Mac
I have been using IPW on PC's for a while with one Vault. Replaced one of the PC's with a Mac. The master 1PW profile is syncing correctly on the new Mac, but I am not sure how to get the existing vault synced to the Mac?
1Password Version: 6.1 on Mac
Extension Version: 610005
OS Version: OS X 10.11.3
Sync Type: Dropbox

Hi @Stephen1PW,
Stephen is right, our User Guide can walk you through the process of syncing existing data into a new installation of 1Password.
However, it sounds to me like you've already set up 1Password on your Mac and created a Master Password, is that correct?
If so, we'll need to do things a little bit differently than the article that Stephen linked to suggests. Let's try this:
- Open Preferences > Sync
- Select 'Dropbox' from the dropdown menu
- Click 'Choose' to select your existing datafile in Dropbox
- A Finder window will pop up, navigate to your datafile and click 'Open'
- 1Password will ask you if you wish to merge the existing database with the vault on your Mac, say yes :)
- Type in your Master Password
- Your data will import, and you'll be all good to go!
I hope this helps, but if you hit any snags in the process, we're here for you!

Megan,
I think you have picked up on my problem. I am brand new to the Mac, and I am getting stuck at the "Click 'Choose' to select your existing datafile in Dropbox" step. All I am seeing is the following when I click on Sync:- Vaults Primary
- I have Dropbox selected from the drop-down
- Below I am seeing the file hierarchy "Roberta" "Dropbox" "1Password" "1Password.agilekeychain"
- Last synced 18 seconds ago
Do you mind helping me beyond this step and then I am sure I will get it working.
Thanks for your help.

Hi @Stephen1PW,
Sorry for the confusion about that - it sounds like Dropbox sync is already enabled for the Primary vault on your Mac, and it's syncing with the "1Password.agilekeychain" sync file in Dropbox. Therefore you won't see the 'Choose' button because that only appears when setting up Dropbox sync for a vault.
Is the problem that the vault from your Windows PCs is not syncing to your Mac? If so, I think we'll need to know a few more details about your setup:
- In 1Password on your Mac, is there any data in the Primary vault? If so, is it the same data from 1Password on your Windows PCs?
- Does your 1Password data sync between both of your Windows PCs? Or do you have a different vault on each PC?
- If your vault syncs between both Windows PCs, does it do so via Dropbox?
- If you open 1Password on each Windows PC and go to Preferences > General, what is the exact file path & name of the vault?
- Are you using the same Dropbox account on your Windows PCs as you are on your Mac?
Once we know more about how your setup for 1Password on each computer, we'll have a much better idea of how to get this all straightened out. Thanks in advance! :)

Drew,
Here the answers to your questions:- Yes there is data in the Primary vault on the Mac and it is the same data that is on the PC's.
- Yes 1PW Primary vault data is syncing properly between PC's (1 & 2) and the new Mac.
- Yes, use Dropbox to sync both PC's and the Mac
- On main PC: "C:\Users\Stephen\Dropbox\1Password\1Password.agilekeychain"
- On secondary PC: "C:\Users\Stephen\Dropbox\1Password\1Password.agilekeychain" A side note, I notice the secondary vault is not available on this PC either!
- Yes, I am using the same Dropbox account on all three machines (2 PC's and the Mac)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks @Stephen1PW! So, it sounds like your 1Password vaults syncs correctly between all three computers. That's good news of course, but it means I'm a bit confused about what isn't working, and what you need help to do. In your original message, you said you had one vault, and it sounded like you were having trouble syncing that one vault to your Mac.
Is the problem actually related to your side note?
A side note, I notice the secondary vault is not available on this PC either!
If you have another vault and are having trouble syncing that to your Mac (and/or your other Windows PC), that should be fairly easy. Each vault has its own sync settings, so you'll first need to make sure that vault is syncing via Dropbox. Then on your Mac, find the sync file for that vault in your Dropbox folder and double-click it. You should see a prompt to add that vault to 1Password.
If you can let us know exactly what you're trying to do, we can give some more specific steps to get this all set up and working. Thanks! :)

Drew,
I have the Primary Vault working on all 3 machines (2 PC's and Mac). It was also on the old retired PC. In addition to the Primary, I have a secondary Vault on the main PC (and it was also on the retired PC with the following path:
C:\Users\Stephen\Dropbox\Apps\1Password\1Password RM .agilekeychainHow do I get this "RM vault" synced to Dropbox on Main PC and then access it on all the other devices?
Hopefully this explains what I have and what I want to do.
Thanks in advance.

Hi @Stephen1PW,
Thanks for clarifying things for us!
First, let's talk about how Windows manages 'multiple' vaults. You can have any number of vaults in 1Password for Windows, but you must open them one at a time. You won't see a unified view of all your vaults like you do on Mac or iOS. (Our developers are working on making 1Password for Windows more consistent with our other platforms, and we hope to have something new and awesome for Windows users in the near future.)
But for now, what this means is that, if you're viewing one vault on in 1Password for Windows, you'll need to go to File > Open Datafile to switch between vaults.
If Dropbox is installed on your main PC, (and it sounds like it is), you should have access to that secondary vault already. Can you access it using File > Open Datafile in 1Password?
To get this secondary vault into 1Password for Mac, here's what we'll do:
- Open a Finder window to your Dropbox folder
- Locate your secondary vault
- Double click the
1Password RM .agilekeychain
- 1Password will open and prompt you for the Master Password of this vault
And that should do it!
Please let me know how this goes. :)

Megan,
If Dropbox is installed on your main PC, (and it sounds like it is), you should have access to that secondary vault already. Can you access it using File > Open Datafile in 1Password? Yes I can by using File >Reopen 1Password Vault>
Open a Finder window to your Dropbox folder - **OK** Locate your secondary vault - **cannot locate this secondary vault in dropbox 1PW folder. See screenshot:** Double click the 1Password RM .agilekeychain - **Not seeing this file?** 1Password will open and prompt you for the Master Password of this vault
I uploaded the screen shot of the dropbox folder on Mac, but am not seeing it. Please let me know if you want me to resend?
Thanks,

Hi @Stephen1PW,
First of all, thank you for including your file paths earlier in the thread. Turns out, I was skimming just a little and missed an important detail there.
Your primary vault is stored here:
Dropbox\1Password\1Password.agilekeychain
And your secondary vault is stored here:
Dropbox\ Apps \1Password\1Password RM .agilekeychain
When Dropbox introduced the Apps folder as a way to group app files and keep them neatly out of the way of whatever else you might want to store in Dropbox, we changed the default location that 1Password stores data, from the root of the Dropbox folder, to the new Apps folder.
So, to find your secondary vault, please check the Apps folder in Dropbox. This should make it easier for you to follow the rest of my instructions.
My apologies for missing that earlier!

Megan,
Thank you, I have the secondary vault on the Mac now. What confuses me is that I still have to log into the primary vault and then can access the secondary vault. Kinda, makes me wonder what the purpose of the secondary vault is?
I am very busy today, so do not have time to research further - it least it is working now,
Thanks for your help.

Hi @Stephen1PW,
My apologies for the confusion here. I'll do my best to explain things so that you don't have to do any more research. :)
First of all, 1Password has always been designed so that you would only ever have to remember one password. Sometimes we don't always make that goal, but we believe that the fewer passwords you have to keep in your brain, the better. So, when we introduced Multiple Vaults as a way to organize and selectively share your data, we wanted to make sure that you didn't end up having to remember multiple passwords to unlock all these vaults. So, unlocking your primary vault will also unlock all of your secondary vaults. Thus you can continue to remember only one password, no matter how many vaults you have.
So, what is the purpose of multiple vaults? They were designed to allow you to selectively share data. Every family and company has information that they need to share, but not every family or company wants to share all their information with all their members. So, multiple vaults lets you share the information that you need to share, while keeping your personal information secret.
I hope this helps, but if you have any further questions, we're here for you!
