1Password sync

Hello,
I have a business client who uses Nomadesk cloud services. (http://www.nomadesk.com/). It is like Dropbox, but it has encryption and adds a driveletter per vault.
Now he wants to start using 1password. Could we try to sync via NomaDesk? We would rather not use Dropbox for safety reasons.
Could we just try folder sync via a vault on NomaDesk or would that not work?
Thanks

  • Hi @osigoldman,

Officially, out of Dropbox and iCloud, we do not support any other third party sync services but you can try it and see if it works.

The first problem is accessibility, if the vault is not accessible to 1Password on the PC, it won't open and may act as if you have no 1Password data. So, you must make the vault accessible first before opening 1Password on the PC.

On the Macs, it shouldn't be a problem if you use Folder Sync as 1Password has an always-accessible internal database that it will keep in sync with the external folder you choose.

We do want to improve 1Password on Windows to support Folder Sync but right now, it directly accesses your 1Password vault(s), thus the accessibility issue I mentioned.

Are you planning to sync your vault to mobile devices?

    Hi Mike,

we may be syncing to mobile too, not sure yet. It might happen in a later stage.

With other words you are advising against syncing with NomaDesk (with 1password for Windows)?
Of course it is not a nice solution to have to setup 2 cloud syncs.
The company is a medical one so they need to be careful with their data, so Dropbox is not so good.

    Thanks,

@osigoldman: Indeed, but it's important to keep in mind that your 1Password data is end-to-end encrypted, so 1Password simply doesn't depend on the sync service to protect your data. 1Password is secure by design, not by chance.

While we can certainly consider adding official support for additional sync methods, that's a rather long line, and it isn't possible to add them all. However, as Mike mentioned, if you just need to sync data between computers, it may very well be that it could work for you with your existing sync service. It just isn't something we've vetted, so it's up to you to backup your data in case there's some sort of conflict. We don't have any control over 3rd party software and services.

  • Hi @osigoldman,

Basically, you can start with NomaDesk and try it out, just make sure you back up your data more often.

If you guys plan to sync to your mobile devices, you can use the Wi-Fi sync to keep it isolated to your local network while using NomaDesk between computers.
