I just *cannot* get browser integration working at all :-(

So I'm using the 1password for families service with 1password beta for Windows 10. I have uninstalled 1Password4. I have manually installed the browser extension for chrome and it just complains that it cannot see the 1password helper at all! On the mac this works brilliantly - at home it works so well but when I come to work I have about 60 passwords and I'm exhausted copy pasting them out of the web app.

    I think you need to be using the non Windows 10 beta to have browser integration, and you need to make sure that program is open to have the integration work; unlike the Mac version there is no (currently) background version of the program running such that the helper continues to run. As of right now the integration is quite rough; matching is pretty minimal so 90+% of the time I'm using it, I see no results, but your mileage may vary. I found it confusing that there are two betas for Windows currently available; I feel the Windows 10 version is a bit more polished, but the other Windows beta is the only one (I believe) supporting browser integration.

    I didn't even want the Windows 10 beta - I'm on 1Password for families. Installing the other beta for Windows 7 just gives me 1Password v4 which requires me to point it at a vault. Where is the other version that I'm missing? I really really like this service and on a mac its outstanding but its all over the place on an OS version that's been out a year and I've paid for this.

    Hi guys,

    @cannontrodder:

    Here's the early 1Password 6 for Windows beta build: https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/64591/help-us-welcome-1password-6-to-our-windows-family#latest

    I do apologize that we don't have a stable version of 1Password yet on Windows that has full support for Families and browser extensions, it requires a lot of changes that requires a new version to be built rather than trying to adapt an existing version like 1Password 4 for Windows.

    We're working as fast as we can to implement the rest of the browser extension integration support, such as saving, auto-submit, an extension view and many more.

    @rcgfl, the matching is very rough and we're working on it right now.

    Ok I get the fact it isn't finished but 1Password4, 1Password4beta, 1Password6 beta for windows 10, 1Password6 beta for windows 7 and 8, a browser extension and a beta browser extension, 1password, 1password for teams and 1password for families. My issue isn't with the quality of code as such, it's that I'm, saying:

    "Your product offering is EXTREMELY confusing and I don't fully understand it - here, have all of my families secrets and my money"

    It's your product people that need to act, not your developers.

    I'm also not able to get browser extensions working in the new Windows desktop beta. I've installed the new beta, installed the latest browser extension, and tried restarting my computer and the apps in various combinations, and on no site does ctrl+\ or the extension toolbar button do anything.

    In another thread, I saw a reference to making sure the old 1Passworld 4 helper isn't running; I've uninstalled that version and confirmed it's not in task manager.

    Is there a secret recipe for getting this working?

  • Hi guys,

    We absolutely agree and we do apologize for the confusion. Right now, 1Password Families and Windows are in the middle of a massive transition with a lot of things being worked on to get 1Password Families ready on Windows.

    To clarify things:

    1. 1Password 4 is the current stable program but it does not support Families, we are going to wrap up the beta for this soon, so we can focus only on 1Password 6 betas
    2. 1Password 6 beta is the same desktop program on Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10
    3. 1Password beta for Windows 10 is a Universal Windows Platform app that runs only on Windows 10 devices such as Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 desktop, Holo Lens, Xbox and so on. You can only find it in the Windows 10 store.

    We are going to drastically simplify them, reduce the number of different products as we continue to get closer to our release schedule.

    @dwh:

    Is there a secret recipe for getting this working?

    1. First, confirm 1Password 4 Helper is not running by terminating Agile1pAgent.exe in the task manager
    2. Close all browsers
    3. Open the 1Password 6 desktop program and unlock it. Make sure it is the latest version (as of now, it is 2016.6.201d) by clicking on the Settings button on top right to see the version on the bottom of the Settings menu.
    4. While this is unlocked, open the browser, and visit a site that you have a Login for. Click on the 1Password icon in the browser to open it. The keyboard shortcut is not yet implemented.

    If you see no Login found, switch back to the main 1Password 6 beta program and click on the Browse button of the said Login item. Does this work?

    @MikeT :-1:

    Many of my logins show "no matching items found", when I click the extension button, but others are just blank - I assume these are matching but failing to send the data.

    I tried the Browse button in the 1Password beta, taking a while to find a site for which the bookmarked URL was actually the login page and not a password change page or an invalid page (which the browser extensions generally don't care about, of course), and when I found a login page, it did properly submit my username and password.

    So while I don't have login functionality from the extension itself, the Browse button should work for now - it's certainly better than just using the Families web site on my work machine, and of course I can adjust saved URLs to be the login pages where necessary. Thanks!

    Hi @dwh,

    That's a known issue, the matching is too tight right now. It must match the URL exactly between the browser's address bar and the Login's saved URL or it'll return no matching items found regardless of how identical they are.

    We are working on improving the matching system and will ship updates that will further improve the integration between the extension and the app.

    We just shipped an update now that no longer requires you to select the right vault or to use All Vaults in the main 1Password app to find your Login items in the extension.

    I have followed the "secret recipe" above for getting 1P6 beta to take over the 1P browser plugin in Chrome, but it seems to keep defaulting back to 1P4 instead. Any next-level tricks to try? I am not ready to remove 1P4 from my machine as I can see how rough 1P6 still is around the edges :).

    @MikeT Mike, I'm sorry if I was OTT yesterday but just reached a certain frustration point. Seeing how great this is on OSX and then having to wrestle with it at work just pushed me over the edge. Anyway, it's clear you understand the frustrations and I'm preaching to the choir so I won't bang on about it. Really looking forward to future iterations and just to let you know that when the new features do come out, it will have a significant impact on people's real day-to-day lives. Have a great weekend!

    @Josh Brandt: Sorry for the trouble! I totally understand that it's useful to keep 1Password 4 around during this transition. WHIle you don't need to uninstall it, you will need to kill Agile1pAgent.exe in Task Manager (Ctrl Shift Esc). That won't kill the Helper permanently though, only until the next time you launch 1Password 4 or restart Windows. I'm sorry of the inconvenience. We'll have to either find a way for them to peacefully coexist...or simply make the new version good enough so you can ditch the old one. ;)

    @cannontrodder: I hear you! We're anxious to get the new Windows app to the point where it's only a benefit to our workflows and not a hindrance...but we also don't want to rush things, so we'll keep at it every day until you forget you had these issues in the first place. Thanks so much for your honest feedback and patience! :)
