Import from Dropbox to Families via Windows 6 strips *all* URLs from *all* entries

Hi,

I am a Families member who had been holding out on the move from Dropbos sync to 1P teams sync because I need a Windows client at my day job (Mac/iOS otherwise). With the Windows beta launch yesterday, I figured now was a good time to try moving my main vault off of Dropbox and onto the Families infrastructure. Because I was at work, I logged into my Families account and my Dropbox account, and then copied all entries from my Dropbox vault into my "Personal" vault. After some keyboard banging yesterday to try to get browser extensions working with 1P6, this morning I went to test the extensions again and got a "No Matching items found" message. I figured it was the "too strict URL matching" bug I had seen in the forums, so I went in to make sure I had a strict URL match, and I discovered that the URL was blank! And that data definitely existed before I moved it into the Families Vault. A new Login Item created directly in the Families Vault has the correct URL, so it seems most likely that the URLs got stripped in the import process, rather than on the server side? As I looked further, it appears that the "Website" field for ALL of my entries are now blank (except the one entry I created new in the new Vault).

I am not worried about data loss - I can roll back to Dropbox and keep waiting to move my family onto the Families infrastructure, but I know you guys take data integrity seriously, so I wanted to bring this to your attention!

Hmm, when I log into my Families account online, each entry appears to display the correct domain in small gray text beneath the entry, so each login item seems semi-aware of the domain it is associated with. But when I view the details of any entry, the Website field is just the http:// placeholder text. (and as I mentioned, my Chrome extension can't find any matches for any site)

Hey @JoshBrandt, thank you so much for bringing this up. Data integrity is a major issue for us, and we advise all new 1Password 6 beta users to keep their data backed up while they use the beta. This looks like a migration bug that occurs when moving items from a .agilekeychain vault; could you confirm what format your Dropbox vault is? It's either .opvault or .agilekeychain.

Thanks @mohamedosman. It is an .agilekeychain vault.

Thanks for getting back to us @Josh Brandt. This issue is limited to .agilekeychain vaults and you should be able to move your data safely if you use the .opvault format.

There are many benefits to the opvault format and I think it's very beneficial to switch to this more secure format. You can follow this guide if you want to make the switch.

  • Hi @Josh Brandt,

Just to be clear, we do plan to fix this for the agilekeychain format in a future update, you can wait until the fix is available or you can choose to convert to the OPVault format.

OK thanks, I have moved my primary vault over to opvault. Finally got the bad data deleted out of my vault (the beta does not do well with deleting 500 entries all at once ;) ), and I will give it another go! Thanks team!

  • Hi @Josh Brandt,

What happened exactly? We do need to know anything that goes wrong in the beta, so we can fix it.

@MikeT with the deletion? It was really unclear/inconsistent what was happening, which is why I didn't explain above.

I think some of the issue is how slow the sync/refresh is - I was unclear when I was doing "Select All --> Delete" if the action was in process, if it had completed but the view hadn't refreshed yet, or if the action had never fired. Closing and reopening the app would show that the item count had gone down, but not to zero (AKA that trick stopped working after a while). Around the point where I had 46(?) items remaining I got fed up and jumped into the web interface and was manually deleting one by one there (hence my other question this morning).

    Hi @Josh Brandt,

We are missing a lot of the UX feedback in the app, a lot of things feel slow or frozen despite the fact that majority of the actions should be instant. As for the latter, we are missing some refresh calls when finishing tasks.

We will fix this and I'll file a separate bug report for not having any UX feedback when deleting large number of items.

One thing is that when you delete an item, there's a separate bug where it would reset the view back to All vaults instead of retaining the current view, this cause a slowdown because it has to reload the whole UI to load all items.

    Thanks for sharing your experience!

@MikeT, thanks for the overview of the current state of the Windows beta. I tried to read a bunch before installing it, but it is always hard to get a good feel of what is done vs what is still in progress until you dive in.

  • Hi @Josh Brandt,

We're still a few months away, we are targeting for the August 1st release date and we have a lot of major changes that's being worked on. The next one that's being overhauled right now is our item viewer/editor and of course we'll continue to work on our browser extension integration daily.

If there's anything right off the bat that you think we should consider fixing, please let us know. Any feedback you can share, we'd love to hear.

Hi there, I'm running into this same issue trying to switch from Dropbox to Families -- everything seems to copy over except the website/URL values. I'm using the 1Password 6 Beta for Windows.

Is this still a known bug when using agilekeychain format?

If so, is my only option to switch to opvault format before copying over to Families? I looked at the instructions for switching to opvault format linked to in this chain, but couldn't find an export option in 1Password 6 Beta.

    Thanks for any guidance!

P.S. For context in case it's helpful, I have used 1Password with Dropbox for several years on a Macintosh, but recently switched to a Windows machine so am trying to figure out the best way to get up an running on my Windows machine (I also use 1Password on an Android phone, iOS device, and ideally could access from a Chromebook as well). My understanding from reading through everything is that my best bet is going to be to make the switch away from using Dropbox (which had been working fine for me) to Families at this point in order for things to work well on Windows. But let me know if there's anything I'm not thinking of.

    Hi @siwel,

Yes, it is still an issue in the latest 1Password 6 Beta build, we are aiming to have a proper fix soon as we're redoing how the local vault data comes into 1Password 6 Beta's database.

You don't have to convert to OPVault, you can export from the AgileKeychain using 1Password 4 for Windows and then import it directly into your Families vault via 1Password 6 beta, which is what we recommend right now.

There is no export yet in 1Password 6, you have to use the original vault in 1Password 4 first.

    Here's how to get started:

    1. Open 1Password 4, unlock and go to the File Menu > Export, select the 1Password Interchange File format and set it to All items.
    2. Save the export file in a safe place, don't store it in any cloud folders.
    3. Open 1Password 6 Beta, unlock and click on Settings on top right to select Import.
    4. Select the vault you want to import the data into. Don't import into a vault that already has the data previously imported as it won't update them. Instead, either create a new vault to import into (use 1Password.com's admin console) or delete the recent imported data first before you proceed.

After that, you should be all set to go. If yes, be sure to delete your 1PIF file and empty the trash afterward.

My understanding from reading through everything is that my best bet is going to be to make the switch away from using Dropbox (which had been working fine for me) to Families at this point in order for things to work well on Windows. But let me know if there's anything I'm not thinking of.

That's the goal but we're not yet there on Windows. For an example, 1Password 6 Beta for Windows right now doesn't have all extension features implemented such as auto-save, credit card/identity filling and so on. 1Password 6 Beta is a beta of a brand new application on Windows that will need some time to implement all the features we want and we're working our butts off to get them done as soon as we can. Expect a lot of updates to come soon to enable more extension features and more improvements to the rest of the app.

Thanks for the detailed and quick response. I'll give it a try. I don't have 1Password 4 installed so will do that first. I had installed it briefly when I first got this Windows machine a few weeks ago, but it seemed to be acting erratically so uninstalled it. My instinct is that I can live with the missing functionality you mention isn't yet in the beta.

  • Hi @siwel,

You don't need 1Password 4 if you still have the original 1PIF file but if you don't, then you can find the download for it here: http://agilebits.com/downloads

If there's anything we can do to help, let us know.
