Updating Beta Without Desktop Icons

I understand that we should be launching the 1Password 6 Beta for Windows using the desktop icon so that it updates itself. However, I do not use desktop icons. I actually have them set to not show at all on my machine. When I do launch something new, I tend to use the Start menu (Windows 7). Will the 1Password link in the start menu also update the Windows 1Password beta as it launches, or is the desktop shortcut the only one that will? Are there other shortcuts that'll work, and could I copy the desktop shortcut to another location on the hard drive and maintain the update behavior?

When I look at the properties for the desktop shortcut and the start menu shortcut, I don't notice any differences other than their location on the drive. But I figured it was better to verify with you guys than to assume. FWIW, the start menu shortcut I'm talking about is in the start menu under All Programs -> AgileBits, Inc -> 1Password. I can provide the location on the drive and details about the shortcut if needed.

  • Hi @equiraptor,

Yes, launching 1Password 6 beta from the start menu will be fine as well, it's the same as the one on the desktop. The only issue is when you manually pin it to the taskbar as it will not open the correct file from there. However, I believe this is only an issue on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, not Windows 7. We will switch to a different system later on to avoid all of these gotchas.

You should see the update checker pop up on the top left of your screen as soon as you open it from the start menu.

Great. Thanks for confirming, and thanks for providing the note about the update checker. That's a great way I can make sure the update is running, myself (and poke at things to fix it if it didn't).
