1Password 6 for Windows is missing functionality?

I love 1Password; I use it on Windows 10, Mac, and iOS. I've been using iPassword 4 on Windows, but I recently installed version 6, which looks a lot nicer - but it seems to be missing functionality (especially when compared with the Mac version), and that's got me confused.

  • Clicking on a password doesn't automatically copy it to the clipboard (I have to click the password once to make the 'copy' button appear, then click the 'copy' button)
  • Clicking on a URL doesn't open a browser to go to that URL
  • Clicking on anything a second time displays it in large type, but only the first eight characters of it
  • The Firefox browser plugin says that my 1Password vault is locked, but I have the 1Password 6 window open and unlocked. Is the plugin trying to use 1Password 4? Are there 1Password 6-specific browser plugins coming?
  • There doesn't appear to be any password generator, that I can find
  • The 'Add' button is greyed out; I can't add a new password
  • The 'x' icon in the search field only appears when the field has focus, so if it doesn't have focus then it takes an extra unnecessary click to clear it

Are these known bugs, or can I log them as bugs? Or are they intentional omissions? Seems odd to leave out this functionality.

Also, another odd thing - clicking on any of the icons on the left edge of the 1Password window, or clicking any of my 1Password entries, makes the contents of the 1Password window 'flinch' as if it's lost vertical hold for an instant. It appears to be intentional, but it's a weird effect, and I've never seen other apps do it. It makes the app seem less solid.

I hope you can address these issues; they would go a long way towards making 1Password 6 more usable!

@bkendig: I hope you don't mind, but I've moved you to the Windows beta category of the forums since that's the version you're referring to.

1Password 6 is still very much in beta, and we're definitely working to address the issues you described — many of which are already resolved in the desktop version, which is further ahead since it's needed by folks using older versions of Windows in addition to Windows 10 users. The Windows Store (UWP) app is primarily available for Windows Phone users. Please try this instead:

    1Password 6 desktop beta (Windows)

However, 1Password 6 is geared toward the 1Password subscription services since 1Password 4 cannot support them, and it has only read-only access of local vaults (which is why you weren't able to edit). So if you're sticking with local vaults for now, 1Password 4 is the way to go.

But of course you're welcome to use 1Password 6 and we appreciate the feedback! The desktop version linked above has browser extension support, and the password generator is available within the app when editing an item. The user interface has been improved as well, and we're continuing to work on it, both leading up to the stable release and afterward to add more features and improvements. Please check it out and let us know what you think! :)

Aha, thank you - I didn't realize this was a beta! The Windows Store doesn't say it's a beta - well, okay, I see "beta" in the description, but I thought the name in the Windows Store used to be "1Password Beta" and then I saw the name dropped the Beta part. And the version number when I run it is 6.0.161u, which doesn't look beta-y.

And I was also completely unaware that there was a separate, non Windows Store version of 1Password 6.

I'll stick with 1Password 4 for now. I do hope that version 6 eventually has all the functionality of version 4, so that I can upgrade to the new interface.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi @bkendig,

We do apologize about the confusion.

We wanted to change our versioning scheme (2016.5.12 > 6.0.161u) for the UWP version of 1Password 6 Beta in the Windows Store but we can't change it for existing app and we can't submit a different app with the same name. So, what we did is submitted 1Password instead and updated the 1Password Beta app to let folks know to update to the newer 1Password app with the beta description.

In addition, we had a lot of users asking for Windows 7, 8.1 support along with the browser extension, so to make it happen sooner, we've decided to build the non-Windows Store version. This is now more frequently updated compared to the Windows Store app version.

Is the Windows Beta set up to create a Local vault at all? I see I can log into cloud accounts (1Pass's own proprietary system, as well as OneDrive and Dropbox storage), and there's a "Folder" option for opening a vault, but it seems like there's no way to use the Win10 product to make a new local-only vault.

  • Hi @AurosHarman,

Not yet, local vaults are still read-only in 1Password 6. Once we add full write support to 1Password 6, you'd be able to not only modify your existing vaults but to create new ones as well.

For 1Password.com accounts, you can create any number of vaults using the Admin Console on 1Password.com web site.
