New user of v6 Beta - Thoughts and Feedback
I am a relatively new user of 1password and so far I am liking it -- for the most part. I thought I would offer some of my initial thoughts based on early usage
- Not a fan of "Tags" -- folders are much more useful when you have hundreds of passwords
- If "Tags" are around to stay, there needs to be a way to bulk edit/add/remove tags
- If "Tags" are around to stay, might be nice if there was a way to organize them (drag them into different orders, collapse multiple tags into a single one, rename tag, move all to new vault, etc)
- It would be awesome if there was a way to group multiple urls into use the same username/password (especially useful for urls with same base domain)
- "New Item" (next to copy/sort) is almost impossible to notice until you know it is there -- maybe add a "toolbar" set of icons below instead?
- When I moved my passwords from v4 to v6 -- why did all of them get tagged with "imported XX"? That just clutters everything up from my perspective
- FireFox extension for v6 is not seeing any of the passwords that I have loaded into my account (nor am I able to add any new ones) -- and yes, I did enabled "Betas" before installing the extension. Right now it just shows a blank window with a search box

Hi @Ravensorb,
Thanks for sharing your feedback on the 1Password 6 Beta, I've moved it to our Windows Beta forum since the regular Windows forum is all about 1Password 4 for now.
- Not a fan of "Tags" -- folders are much more useful when you have hundreds of passwords
Can you explain more about that? Tags is more flexible than folders but that's when everything is implemented. Right now, tags isn't optimized yet in 1Password 6 Beta. If we support folders, it would be the same thing, you can't do much with it.
However, 1Password.com will only support tags, folders won't be implemented as a lot of feedback we've gotten is that folders and tags in the same app is confusing to use. If we expand tags to support smart folders, it may help a bit with more complex organization styles.
- If "Tags" are around to stay, there needs to be a way to bulk edit/add/remove tags
That's coming in a future update, you'd be able to right-click on the tag to rename and delete tags.
- If "Tags" are around to stay, might be nice if there was a way to organize them (drag them into different orders, collapse multiple tags into a single one, rename tag, move all to new vault, etc)
It'll be alphabetically sorted only, you can rename if you want to change things around. Once bulk tag edit support is added to the app, it'll be easier to do this.
If you click on a tag, you can then select all items in the item list to move it to a separate vault.
Bulk editing on multiple items is not yet supported, so trying to add new tags to multiple items won't work yet until we add the ability to support bulk editing.
- It would be awesome if there was a way to group multiple urls into use the same username/password (especially useful for urls with same base domain)
Multiple URLs is coming in a future update. For the moment, you can edit your Login items to add more URLs on 1Password.com web app if you have 1Password.com account.
- "New Item" (next to copy/sort) is almost impossible to notice until you know it is there -- maybe add a "toolbar" set of icons below instead?
We're working on that as we speak, there will be icons added soon.
- When I moved my passwords from v4 to v6 -- why did all of them get tagged with "imported XX"? That just clutters everything up from my perspective
If you've imported your data into an existing vault that has data already, you won't be able to know which items were imported. To make it easier to find them, we tag them with a timestamp, so you know which item was imported and when. We do this, so that you can easily revert by deleting all items with that tag if it went bad or you've chosen the wrong file to import.
Once tag edit support is implemented, you'd be able to remove that tag once by right-clicking on the import tag and delete it.

That's normal for the moment.
Auto-save is not yet implemented. 1Password mini will be updated to support saving new Logins, fill credit card/identity items, ability to view your item's details, see all items, and many more.
Right now, if you click on the 1Password icon or use
Control + \
, it'll only show the Login items that matches the tab you're on. It does not yet have the ability to include other items that doesn't match. For now, what you can do is pressControl + Alt + \
twice to load your database and search for the item you want to open.

@MikeT thanks for the great responses :)
In regards to tags, its been my experience (I have done a lot of UX/XD type work for applications over the years) that tags "feel" like a great solution up until you try to use them with lots of items (ex: think about 500+ items or more). You end up with either a huge list of tags that is almost as hard to work with as a huge list of base items to the point where you need a "quick search" on tags and then a quick search on the items returned in the tags --- or tags end up not really being used were you have items that are tagged so many times it defeats the purpose or you only have a handful of tags that are basically the same as a "quick views" with a large number of items inside them. The value that something like a folder structure brings in is two fold - it forces a 1 to many relationship (which makes things a bit easier to find in the long run for structured items like passwords) and it allows a hierarchy with ever narrowing of a result set through navigation - granted I have seem some good combinations that allow for a "nested" tag concept where you can nest tags and each level if selected applies additional filters or removes them based on navigation up/down in terms of levels (is this what you have in mind for "smart tags"?).
Keep in mind - this is just one persons thoughts and opinions :)

Hi @ravensorb,
We do want to know your thoughts and your experience, thank you for sharing that.
Smart folders is basically a saved search. Say you want items with tag:bills and type:Login, you can save this as a smart folder to show you only the Login items that are tagged as bills. Basically, whatever you look for often, you can speed it up by saving it as a smart folder. It doesn't mean tags only but it can go further than that. For another example, only the items changed more than a year ago, type of Logins, and has weak passwords.
Smart folders could also turn into semi-custom categories or we could implement custom categories in the future that may help with this as it is one of our dreams to implement for 1Password.

Smart folders does sound interesting and may help. The hard part I run into is I have over a thousand passwords to manage (work + personal) and that doesn't even take into account some of the value of storing things like CC or other items in a secure manner. So scrolling thought or typing in some combination of tags really does not appeal to me :) As it will be way too much work to narrow things down

@ravensorb: You're in good company! As you can imagine, we've got a ton of data stored in 1Password too. I used to be a devoted folders guy, but you'll be surprised by how much faster search is than scrolling and clicking through folders. Tags are a useful organizational tool, but much like the file hierarchy on my computers, maintaining and navigating this is supremely inefficient compared to searching for what I need. 1Password search isn't perfect though, so we'll continue to to iterate on that (as well as tags) to make it faster and more flexible. Cheers! :)

Hard part is -- you need to make sure you are consistent on using tags (free form text can get VERY messy) and you can go crazy with tags very easily :) Folders are simple drag/drop done sort of thing. I agree that the two together can be very powerful though -- that is why the idea of smart folders is intriguing. Especially if tags have "auto-complete" to help the same tags be applied consistently? It also would be very helpful if dragging and dropping a record on a "smart folder" with auto-tag the record.

Another suggestion -- auto-detect duplicates and offer to merge

You're absolutely right! Auto-completion and drag and drop can be a big help, and would help with the duplicate problem as well. This is something we want to make consistent across all platforms. Thanks for your feedback on this! :)
