  • Hi @bngmonster,

1Password 6 Beta right now does not support writing to local vault files, they're read-only in 1Password 6 Beta. That's why you cannot select a vault to save to and why the Edit/New Item buttons are grayed out.

We will add full support for local vault files down the line but we don't have a timeframe on this, we're hoping later this year. There is writing support for 1Password.com vaults right now.

Auto-save is not yet implemented in 1Password 6 Beta for all vault types, it is coming in a future update but it won't support saving to read-only vaults.

Is this still true if I am syncing vaults via Dropbox? Saving new items is only valid for 1password for teams?

I hope this is fixed as you are leaving behind long-time 1Password users who need windows at work but use Mac for personal.

@youngjm: 1Password 6 cannot currently write to your local vault in Dropbox, but no one gets left behind. We have a mature, full-featured app you can use: 1Password 4; and as Mike mentioned, we're working to add full local vault support and other features to 1Password 6 as well. Previously we had no native Windows app for 1Password.com users and only folks with local vaults had a Windows app at all; now both can use 1Password. That's fair (in the equitable sense), and we're going to continue to make 1Password for Windows even fairer (in the delightful sense). ;)

@brenty Thanks for your reply but 1password4 makes working with multiple vaults very frustrating when I also work with 1password for mac; they don't feel like equals when I can see where version 6 is at. I am not sure what the issues you are having with writing to dropbox but if 1password4 works, it sounds like there is some code that can be borrowed.

@youngjm: I hear you, and I tend to agree. But lot of folks on the Mac side of things want us to support separate vault unlocking there the way 1Password for Windows version 4 does. I guess you can't please everybody! ;)

You raise an interesting point though. In fact, 1Password 4 doesn't write to Dropbox at all. It just writes to local files on disk; that's why the Dropbox client is required. So there isn't any code to borrow. In theory, it would be nice if there were. But writing 1Password 6 from scratch gives us a lot of flexibility too so we can make it great for everyone. It doesn't support local vaults yet because there's a lot of legacy baggage that comes along with that, and it's important that this is tested throughly before you use it for your important data. Hang in there. We're working on it. :)

Chasing this one up again - been waiting for an update on this thread for a while now. We're knocking on the door of March here and a question which was raised back in August around support for Vault editing / management on Windows 10 for the 1Password6 solution still hasn't been delivered. Any chance we've at least got a date where the functionality is going to be enabled / included?

  • Hi @neil_hartley,

1Password 6 does have full support for editing your data as long as you have a 1Password.com membership, it has been supported ever since last August. Standalone local vaults are not supported and it won't be for a while in 1Password 6. If you need full local vault support only, you have to use 1Password 4 but we recommend giving 1Password.com membership a try.

Thanks for the response Mike - when you say 'It won't be for a while' can you screw it down a little more than that? Personally, I use 1Password across a whole bunch of devices, including Mac / PC / Mobile / Tablets. What I'm after is a locally controllable solution which integrates across all of my devices. It's almost there, but there's a big hole when I use my Desktop PC. Just looking for an indication of the timing of the support for full cross device working - something more specific that in a while if you can? :).

    Hi @neil_hartley,

We cannot narrow it down, local vaults by its nature is extremely complex to build a new app around, that's why we've built 1Password.com instead to abstract all of this away by letting our servers hold the templates data for all apps to use, this makes the native programs more lightweight and easier to use. Local vaults and third party sync services that we cannot control is even more complex, that's why we have a centralized server that will do a much better job of syncing your data across all platforms than any third party service can. By controlling the entire stack, we can do it faster, more reliable, and more integrated in the 1Password experience. The fact that you can easily share data between family members, co-workers and guests is one of the benefits of 1Password.com service, you get access to all 1Password apps and all future upgrades automatically, there are no licensing and sync/backup configurations required.

You can get a better picture by reading Dave's blog comment here about where 1Password 6 is going. We will have a blog post with more details about this soon.

Interesting blog - although it states that you aren't actively working on the stand alone units (which would certainly prevent you from narrowing down any timescales  ).

So fundamentally, in 1Password6 you do support Mac based synchronisation through dropbox for local vaults - as well as mobile / tablet version, but you don't for Windows 10. I think that's what the blog details - does that sound correct? You're also not working on delivering that Win10 support, as you're focused on the subscription based services for 1Password.com - again, I think that's correct?

Personally, I have no problem with the company moving towards the subscription based services (most are) although it will be an inconvenience for me to not have the ability to sync across my PC. So .. last question. Can I use 1Password4 on my Win10 PC and 1Password6 on everything else? Will that provide me with a full cross device solution where I can update / sync the vaults across all devices? Is there anything in terms of data compatibility across versions that would prevent that approach?

Thank again for the super fast responses.

Yes, 1Password 4 for Windows uses the same AgileKeychain/OPVault formats that 1Password 4-6 for macOS/Android/iOS uses. 1Password 5-6 for macOS/iOS is actually based on the same codebase as 1Password 4 for macOS/iOS, that's why they're far more advanced than us at the moment, we couldn't update the 1Password 4 for Windows to 1Password 6, thus the new codebase in 1Password 6.

The only thing to look out for is that 1Password 4 for Windows is slower to use if you use the OPVault format.

although it states that you aren't actively working on the stand alone units (which would certainly prevent you from narrowing down any timescales  ).

Well, it is not that simple because there are specific things we are not working on but that doesn't mean we are not working to improve the program that will benefit the local vault users.

Think of it like this, 1Password apps do not have any preference to where you get your data; to it, all data stored in its internal database is the same. The only exception is when it comes time to export the data into the format used for syncing. 1Password apps do not have to export anything for 1Password.com accounts, it just sends a simple API call with the encrypted data to your 1Password.com database stored on our servers. When it comes to local vaults, it has to export/convert the data, put it in a different vault format with different encryption standards that 1Password.com do not use and then upload it via Dropbox's APIs that can change over time. Not to mention, it has to deal with all sync-related issues on its own, we don't have to deal with it for 1Password.com service, we know how to handle it directly because we have the entire 1Password stack under our controls, we know how the sync works on all levels, unlike the third party services.

So fundamentally, in 1Password6 you do support Mac based synchronisation through dropbox for local vaults - as well as mobile / tablet version, but you don't for Windows 10. I think that's what the blog details - does that sound correct? 1Password 6 for Windows supports Windows 10 as well as Windows 7 and 8.1. It supports read/write to 1Password.com service but read-only for local vaults via Dropbox, OneDrive and Folder Sync.

If by Windows 10, you mean the Windows Universal Platform (Windows Store) app, that's a different story, we are going to release a new UWP version to the Windows Store in the near future but it will be identical to 1Password 6, they're using the same unified codebase.
