beta inaccessible with nvda
Hello all,
I'm blind and testing this beta on Windows and the app is pretty much inaccessible with NVDA, the main screen reader on Windows that I use. I've had limited success with JAWS but can't seem to read any items in my vault. You can get nvda from http://www.nvaccess.org. Let me know if you need any further info. When I open the app with nvda, tabbing around speaks nothing. Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike!
Thank you for writing in. Which version of NVDA are you using? I want to make sure we test the right build.
In previous tests NVDA actually worked better than JAWS and your message makes me worry that we broke something.Cheers,
Alex

Hi @Mike Reiser,
I don't know if you got any email notification but just in case, I'd like to follow up again to see if you can help us. We need to know what NVDA version you're using on Windows 10, so we can test it.
We did make a lot of UI changes in the recent updates that may have broken the accessibility support, sadly and we do apologize, we did not test it again after this update. We'll certainly do another round of accessibility testing soon.

Hello,
I'm using version 2016.3. This is the latest version. Sorry it took me a while to respond, I didn't get an email notification before.0 -
Hi @Mike Reiser,
No need to apologize, the forum is picky about the email notification. We have to encode the at sign before the user's name to ping them and you weren't pinged before, which is why I've followed up with a ping.
With that aside, I've just tested NVDA 2016.3 on Windows 10 with 1Password 6.0.199d. While our tabbing experience does need a huge optimization, I am not seeing where it is not announcing what I'm tabbing through.
Could you give me the step by step of what you're doing, so I can replicate it.
Thanks!

I'm not sure what building using, but I just started one password six. It said system hockey. I tried to tap around and nothing is spoken when I hit tab. I don't know what else is happening it also says pain once in a while as well.

Hi @Mike Reiser,
Would it be possible to take a screenshot and email it to us at support+windowsbeta@agilebits.com? I've checked the default welcome page for fresh install and the lock view, they're all announced by NVDA as expected. It sounds like something else that we don't use, maybe the updater? We do use HockeyApp for our updates but we don't use that name in the app, so it shouldn't be that.

Hello again,
Since the latest beta update, all the issues I reported have been fixed. I can copy things just fine. The only remaining things are that when typing my master password in, nvda makes its critical error sound which I'm guessing is an NVDA issue, and some dialogs aren't read such as the one that asks you to please select an item if you try to copy without selecting anything. I wish there was a way to scan the QR code but my screen reader doesn't see those. The only other thing I would suggest is to look into making it work with Narrator, the screen reader built into Windows as it continues to get better with each Windows 10 update. Currently it says no item in view when tabbing into the master password field. You can invoke narrator by pressing winkey and enter, and it even has a developer mode. Thanks again,
Mike

Hi @Mike Reiser,
Since the latest beta update, all the issues I reported have been fixed.
While that is great news, it is not something that we've fixed on our side. We haven't yet been able to reproduce it, which also means that we didn't change anything to address it.
This does confirm we have a view somewhere that is not accessible and not common to us, otherwise we'd know what you mean and fix it. To me, it sounds like you may have been stuck on an update prompt, which should be accessible but we'll triple check it and fix it.
The only remaining things are that when typing my master password in, nvda makes its critical error sound which I'm guessing is an NVDA issue
The password field is using the highest security settings, so it may be reacting to that. I'm not able to reproduce that sound, is it possible there's a setting you have enabled that I need to turn on?
some dialogs aren't read such as the one that asks you to please select an item if you try to copy without selecting anything.
I think I know what happened here. There are a few dialogs that pop up on top of an existing menu rather than being a part of the menu itself, so you can't right-arrow and NDVA/Narrator doesn't announce anything next to it. If you hover over it, it does announce it. For an example, there's a dialog that pops up next to Copy Item when there's nothing to copy, it would say None of the selected item can be copied but using the keyboard isn't possible here.
We'll get that fixed.
I wish there was a way to scan the QR code but my screen reader doesn't see those.
We're not sure what to do in this situation and we'd love to know your suggestion. 1Password doesn't require you to scan the code, it just needs you to drag the QR code into the app window. Right-clicking on the QR code via 1Password.com web site to copy it won't work because there's a weird issue in the browsers or our site that it doesn't show up as a valid QR code in the clipboard. We're working on addressing this. If you save the image to the disk and copy it, it does then work.
The only other thing I would suggest is to look into making it work with Narrator, the screen reader built into Windows as it continues to get better with each Windows 10 update.
We do use the Narrator when we do a round of accessibility testings, we just haven't done one in a while because there has been a lot of major changes over the last month alone. However, we did not change the locked view and it is what you said, saying No item in view. The stranger issue is that we have not made any changes to that locked view for several months and it was saying master password before. I'll file a bug report and we'll get it fixed soon.
Thank your for your help!

I don't have an immediate suggestion for the QR code issue. The place for this is the most annoying is mobile. I have a QR Reader app, but I'm not sure exactly how to get the QR code from the PDF to that app. I'm using a beta branch version of NVDAA right now, I'll switch back to the stable version and see if the problem persists in the password field.

Hi @Mike Reiser,
It is not possible to scan from the PDF file on the PC. The best option is to drag the code in or take a screenshot of the QR code and then click on the Scan QR > From Clipboard.

will this works similarly on mobile?

Hi @Mike Reiser,
Which mobile device are you using?
There are some issues with certain devices not being able to scan it on the monitors, you have to print it out and scan it from there.

I'm using an iPhone 6s Plus.

@Mike Reiser: That's worked fine for me. We've encountered some issues with certain Android devices (likely due to older, less capable camera hardware), but I haven't heard of any issues with last year's iPhones reading the QR codes from another screen. In fact, usually they pick it up before I've even aimed correctly. Cheers! :)

Hi @Mike Reiser,
Are you using the scanner within the 1Password app? We have a built-in QR scanner to scan from your 1Password.com web app's Get the Apps page. I just want to make sure you're using the 1Password app to scan and not a third party app.

I haven't tried using the actual scanner, whenever I launch it, it just says scan QR code or something like that. Do I need into the page using the 1Password browser?

Hi @Mike Reiser,
Yes, you should be signed in to your 1Password.com account in your web browser on PC or Mac. Unfortunately, we haven't made the site fully accessible yet, it's on top of our list but I'd recommend skipping the scan QR code and enter the data manually if you can, it may be faster.
If you want to try the QR code route, while you're signed in, click on the account name on top right to select Get the Apps and then there's a QR image on the right sidebar. Point your iPhone's camera to this image.
