1P Helper cannot start main application
Steps to reproduce
- Start computer
- Open Firefox
- Go to an address requiring login
- Make sure you're not logged in
- Click 1P symbol in menyu bar (next to hamburger menu)
Expected
1P Helper opens and lets me choose an appropriate login
Actual result
Firefox opens a new tab and displays message File not found (see screen shot)
However
If I start 1P manually and then go through the steps above the Helper works as expected.
My conclusion
1P App must be running for helper to work. Seems undesirable to me. Also not the case on a Mac.
1Password Version: 6.0.198d
Extension Version: 4.5.9
OS Version: Windows 7 SP1
Sync Type: 1P account

Hi @henningklasen,
Do you recall getting a dialog from Firefox to pick an app to associate with
onepassword4-extension://
? Firefox is supposed to prompt you to pick an app to open and from there, you should be able to select 1Password.Can you tell me if you have admin rights on your PC?
Right now, 1Password 6 Beta is not yet tuned to auto-start on its own. Try this:
- Open the main app, unlock, and go to Settings on top right to select Options.
- In General on the left side, check the box next to Start 1Password automatically when I sign in to Windows
- In Browser, make sure the Register 1Password Helper is checked.
After that, let me know if 1Password works better next time you boot up the PC.

Hi Mike,
no I don't recall FF asking to associate app with extension path (or whatever it is called).
Actually I see more glitchy behavior now than when I wrote the post. If I don't use the 1P app for a while, then try to use the Helper in Firefox I may see the "File not found" tab even though 1P is running. I then need to unlock the app and after a while the Helper becomes available again.
I realise I'm not being super accurate in my bug reports. It's not easy for me to pinpoint what "state" triggers Helper bug.
I have performed the steps you outline and we'll see if that improves things.

Hi @henningklasen,
What is happening is the extension is asking Firefox to open 1Password for you but when it does, Firefox doesn't know what app to open because there's no association between the URL and 1Password, so it returns an error. That's why Firefox is supposed to ask you which program to open with these URLs.
Let me know if the steps didn't help, we may need to go deeper and get Firefox to associate the URL to 1Password.
