I signed up for 1Password, having been told how easy it was to use. I ended up with a beta version (6) and now I can't get passwords into the vault. I've logged in, got the browser extension, got 1Password for windows, filled my profile etc etc etc... but I can't get a password into the vault! And I'm about to start losing my hair!!

@topter184: I'm really sorry for the frustration here! I can sympathize. You may not be able to tell from the picture, but my hair is already long gone! :scream:

Unfortunately the new 1Password 6 Windows desktop app does not yet support saving in the browser, but you can create or edit items in the main 1Password app, or using the web interface at 1Password.com. We're working on adding that in an update, but in the mean time that will work for you at least.

I was using the web browser to access a password protected site, but the app did not come forward to ask me if I wanted to save the password - is that function only available in older versions of the application too? Do I need to have the application open in the browser too, because it signed me out after a few minutes.

If that is the case, is it possible to go back to an earlier version of the application which does have full functionality?

  • Hi @topter184,

    • is that function only available in older versions of the application too?

Yes, auto-save support is available in 1Password 4 for Windows.

Do I need to have the application open in the browser too, because it signed me out after a few minutes.

By default, it auto-locks in 10 minutes. You can change this in the Settings > Options > Security in the main app but 1Password only tracks your activity in the main app. We will extend this to 1Password mini/extension in a future update, so it will only sign out after you last used 1Password in general, not just the main app.

If that is the case, is it possible to go back to an earlier version of the application which does have full functionality?

Not with your 1Password.com account, 1Password 4 for Windows only works with local vault files, it cannot use 1Password.com, which is why we're building a new program from the ground up with 1Password 6 Beta.

If you don't want to use 1Password.com service, then you can use 1Password 4 from here: http://agilebits.com/downloads

Hi, Thanks for your answers. To be honest I don't know which version or service I need, or indeed that I am using - you call it a service and I thought I had installed an application? All I know is that I want something to help me look after my passwords so that I can use more secure ones. I don't really care what its called or looks like. I went to 1Password on recommendation and reviewed the video examples etc.. It all looks so simple, and I'm not an idiot, but I'm struggling to use it. I have now added a password for my One Drive account into the vault, but when I go to One Drive and click on the password field the expected hint to use the stored password does not appear. In fact nothing is any different to before I had the 1Password account. I've tried clicking the key icon in the web browser and it just opens a blank window and says its searching!
I know the application will work, else the reviews wouldn't be so good; but its not working for me so either I'm doing something wrong or I've ended up with a version which just doesn't work properly yet. I want it to work, to save me time, but so far its taken me 3-4hrs to get nowhere!
I would be grateful for any advice you can offer me to help me to get it working.
Thanks again - still frustrated but hopeful!

  • Hi @topter184,

1Password.com is a subscription service where you get all 1Password apps on all platforms, securely share your items with family members (if you use Families plan), and we handle the encrypted data for you automatically in the background, so all you have to do is sign in to your 1Password account wherever you are and 1Password is ready for you to use. The exception is that this is not yet fully ready on Windows where it is on other platforms. The video examples you've seen are mostly on macOS, not Windows.

1Password 4 is a local program, it relies on you to manage the data locally on your devices or you could use Dropbox to sync your data between computers and devices, we're not involved in any way. 1Password 4 is mature and has all features that 1Password 6 Beta is still catching up to.

I have now added a password for my One Drive account into the vault, but when I go to One Drive and click on the password field the expected hint to use the stored password does not appear.

You must invoke 1Password to fill, we do not auto-fill on the fly without your permission first. This is a security risk to do this, which is why we don't support this type of automatic filling.

To fill, you either click on 1Password icon or you press the keyboard shortcut, the default is Control + \.

I've tried clicking the key icon in the web browser and it just opens a blank window and says its searching!

That's not normal or how it should behave, do you mean it opened a new tab and says Looking for 1Password Helper? Is it possible to take a screenshot of this and share it with us?

My advice is to let us help you with 1Password 6 Beta and see if we can get it working for you. If not, you can try 1Password 4 instead.

If something is taking you more than 5 minutes, stop and let us know.

    Hi MikeT,
Certainly appreciate your time and help, thanks.
I have to say that I hadn't realised that the application was only mature on apple products. I am definitely not an apple person, IBM and Android only. However, I respect that you are working on this and am prepared to persevere. Using the Ctrl \ function has worked for me, thank you! Breathes a sigh of relief! I now have a little more confidence about assigning a more complex password. Initially it was unable to find the 1Password helper, but now it opens the log in screen for me, so I can log in and access the various areas of the vault. I think we are getting somewhere.

  • Hi @topter184,

One thing that might help is setting 1Password to start automatically when you sign in to your Windows account, this is not on by default.

To do this, open the main 1Password app, unlock, and click on Settings on top right to select Options. In General tab on the left side, check the box next to Start 1Password automatically when I sign in to Windows.

The next time you start up the computer, you can just open your browser and click on 1Password or press Control + Alt + \ to bring up 1Password mini, ensure you're typing into the master password field before you unlock the 1Password mini. There is a bug we're working on to fix the focus issue when you open 1Password mini for the first time.
