Master password not updating in Windows app 6 beta

I changed the master password for an account after signing in to the account using Firefox. But when I open the Windows 6 beta app, it still requires the old password to open. Apparently changing the master password through the web site did not get transferred to the app settings. I don't see an option within the app itself to change the password. I'm stuck. Any help?

@glioma: I'm really sorry for the trouble! The new 1Password 6 Windows desktop beta app does not yet support Master Password changes. Have you edited any items there since changing your Master Password in the web interface? If not, no worries! Just log out of the account in 1Password Settings and log back in with your new Master Password.

However, if you've made changes to anything in the Windows app (or are unsure if you have), please let me know and we'll go from there. I look forward to hearing back from you!

I haven't made any changes to either the app or the web interface. If I'm understanding your reply correctly, there is no way to change the password for the app. Is that correct? That seems like an egregious problem. What if I uninstall the app (including the data files) and then do a new installation. Would it then pick up the correct master password?

@glioma: While the beta is not yet able to change the Master Password remotely (or receive remote changes), you can change it in the app itself to match the new Master Password for your 1Password Account. Just go to Settings (the 'gear' icon) > Security > Change Master Password. Then create a test item in both the app and web interface to verify that the changes are reflected in each and you should be all set. Let me know how it turns out! :)

Thank you for the reply, brenty. I changed the password in the app. I made a test entry into the app and a second test entry into the web interface. The new entries did not get synced between the web interface and the app, however. Which of these entries is actually stored in the cloud? If I make new entries and want to be certain they are saved for the future, should I do so in the app or the web interface? Second, my account is one of the new family accounts. Will that work if I return to 1Password 4 on Windows? I am under the impression that I need to use the version 6 beta to make the new account system work.

  • Hi @glioma,

I've moved this thread to our Windows Beta forum since you're using 1Password 6 Beta for Windows.

1Password.com web app is the truth, that's where all of the local apps will pull the data from and the 1Password.com servers will work with the app on how to update data.

However, in the current beta builds of 1Password 6 for Windows, there's no alert system built yet to tell you that you need to sign in again due to the incorrect password.

Please do the following to fix this:

    1. Sign in to your 1Password account on 1Password.com via your web browser, click on your account name on top right to select Get the Apps and keep this page open.
    2. Open 1Password 6 Beta for Windows alongside your browser, unlock and in your web browser, drag the QR barcode image into 1Password 6's window, you should now see your sign-in page. Please enter your master password and you should then see updates show up.

Thank you, MikeT. That worked. I'll try to remember that in the future when I need to change the master password. I would think, however, that making the master password automatically sync between the web interface and the Windows app would be on the future to-do list.

  • Hi @glioma,

You're welcome. As for the master password sync, yes, it is on our list to make sure 1Password automatically pulls the latest encryption keys from the server to allow you to only unlock with the new password.
