Unable to upgrade from v6.0.186d to latest
Hi,
While opening the main app, I am advised there is a new version for me to upgrade to. I click install, then I accept the UAC dialog and I see the progress bar filling up, but then I see it is reverting everything. The upgrade never finishes.
Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thanks,
1Password Version: 6.0.186d
Extension Version: n/a
OS Version: Windows 10 build 14915
Sync Type: account

@grossolini: You're probably not doing anything wrong! It sounds like the app may simply be damaged. Please uninstall the app (your data is stored separately) and download a fresh copy of the installer here:

I hope that helps. Let me know how it turns out!

@brenty Before I do that, do you want me to send you logs so you can figure out what went wrong? How would I go about it?

@brenty Ok I have more information, I just can't upgrade 1Password any more.
Here is what is happening: I recently installed Google Drive and I use it to backup/sync my Desktop and Documents folders. To do this, I changed the Windows env variables that refer to these folders (local Windows user account) to point them to the new folders that are synced with GDrive.
So instead of having:
C:\Users\Guillaume\Desktop
I now have something like:
C:\Users\Guillaume\Google Drive[Workstation]\DesktopHowever, this doesn't make 1Password very happy during installation:
"An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: C:\Users\Guillaume\Google Drive[Workstation]"
Try Again / CancelI don't have details on why there is this error, why it tries to create this folder instead of realising the folder already exists.
Please help,

Hey @grossolini, It's unclear what exactly is causing this issue and I need a bit more information about your configuration.
When you installed Google Drive, did you already have 1Password installed?
Did Google Drive move your 1Password folder to the new directory, or did you do this manually?
Have you tried Brenty's solution of uninstalling you're previous version and attempting a fresh reinstall?
Do you have admin access on the PC you're attempting the install on?
Lastly, do you have admin access to the PC you're installing on?

Hi @brenty & @mohamedosman,
Yes, 1Password has been installed for a while now, while GDrive was installed only recently.
GDrive did not move the 1Password folder, and neither did I move it myself; I have no idea why 1Password is aware of GDrive being there.
Indeed, I have admin rights on this Windows account.
Just now I have tried deleting the old 1Password app before reinstalling the link provided by @brenty, and it doesn't work either, which means that instead of merely having an outdated version, I now have no access to my passwords (apart from the web interface I guess). This issue just git a bit more serious.Regards,

Basically, the issue is: if it can't create a folder that already exists, why does it fail at all?

Hi @grossolini,
It is possible it is having a hard time with the symbols
[]
in the directory path, many installers have issues with symbols and we advise against using them in your folder names.Starting with the 197d update, we've switched to installing 1Password to your
%LOCALAPPDATA%\1Password\app\6
directory, this bypasses the UAC prompt for many of our users. Did you modify the environment variable for%LOCALAPPDATA%
as well? When you attempt to install 1Password, did you change the default installation directory during the setup?

Hi @grossolini,
We think the issue might be the shortcut that it places on the desktop. We've removed this from the next update and I'll send you a private message of a private build to confirm this.

@MikeT thank you, that worked.

Excellent! Thanks for the update. On behalf of Mike, you are most welcome! It sounds like you should be all set, but don't hesitate to reach out if we can be of further assistance. Cheers! :)
