How do I move my vault to dropbox?

I'm surprised how hard I've found it getting started with 1Password. Most recently Ive spent the last 2 hours trying to get 1Password on 2 computers. I guess this means I need to have my vault in Dropbox? I've read through the first two pages on Google and on Agilebits Support and Forum on how to do this but it seems I'm missing a step.

https://support.1password.com/dropbox-share-vault/
https://support.1password.com/sync-options/

  1. Open and unlock 1Password.
  2. Choose > Accounts & Vaults > Sign in to Dropbox.
  3. Once you’re signed in, select the vault you want to open from the list.

I think my problem is step 3. "Once you're signed in" ... to Dropbox? ... "select the vault" ... I get the message "Unable to locate any vaults in your account". Which makes sense, I didnt put any vaults there yet. How do I find my vaults? I search my computer for opvault or agilekeychain but didnt find any. I've used the 1Password desktop app Folder > Open Vault (Ctrl+Shift+O) but it shows me my desktop.

I would appreciate any help getting getting 1Password to work on both my computers. I think the problem is getting 1Password to sync with Dropbox and I think the problem there is simply finding my vaults to copy/move them over to Dropbox.

Thanks
Chris

@globalloonan, I think the short answer is that you don't need to (and probably won't want to) sync through Dropbox.

I'm not an employee, just another user of 1Password 6 Beta Desktop for Windows (and also 1Password 6 stable edition on Android). I sync'd through Dropbox for years with 1Password 4. Some of the documentation you are reading seems more appropriate for 1Password 4 for Windows, but you're on 1Password 6 Beta. There doesn't seem to be much documentation yet for 1Password 6 Beta Desktop for Windows.

I'm not sure this is the only way, but the best way for me was to create a free-for-6-months account on https://1password.com/extlink/1password-signup/ . Now, all four of my devices (2 Windows, 2 Android) sync automatically through the my.1Password.com website, and I don't use Dropbox any more. No vaults to fool with. No Dropbox to fool with.

Once you have an account, my.1Password.com lets you view all your data directly online if you wish, and the 1Password 6 Beta Desktop for Windows (and also 1Password 6 stable edition on all the other operating systems) sync to/from your my.1Password.com data set.

@globalloonan: First of all, I want to apologize for the confusion and trouble you're having getting started with 1Password. Right now we're going through a bit of an awkward phase on Windows because we have two apps in active development:

    • 1Password 4 is a stable, mature app that supports local vaults
    • 1Password 6 is a brand new app in beta which supports 1Password Accounts

So if you're using the 1Password subscription service, you'll need the latter, since the previous version predates (and therefore cannot work with) 1Password Accounts.

nhDOBsfc is correct. If you're using the subscription service, there's no need to create local vaults and configure Dropbox sync. You just login to your 1Password Account on each device to access your data. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions! :)
