Imported Vault from Mac to 1Password 6 in Windows 10, but no icons

I've been grooming my 1Password Vault for years, sometimes obsessively, to be as clean as can be, and spent a lot of time importing proper icons for as many entries as possible...I have 736 items, so when I found that none of my icons have imported into the Windows version you might imagine I wasn't happy about it.

Did I do something incorrectly or is this expected behavior (for now)?

How can I make sure that the icons don't get lost and may be imported at a later time? What's the best procedure to assure that my Mac vault and Windows vault will be in sync, icons and all?

Thanks for keeping on top of the best password manager out there, team 1Password!
Best from Bavaria,
Till

  • Hi @tillkrueger,

It is expected at the moment, there is no attachment support yet for the local vaults, which also means it can't read the custom icons, since these are attachments as well. The support for attachments is coming in the near future, we've just implemented it for the 1Password accounts a few days ago and the work we're doing there will make it easier for us to add it to the local vaults. I don't have a timeframe on when it may be done.

Right now if you're syncing via Dropbox and are not using 1Password.com account, you're all set for now. When we do implement the support for them, the sync will allow the app to grab the data it needs. We're not modifying your local vaults in any way, it's read-only and thus the attachments are not touched either.

However, if you are exporting and importing into your 1Password account, you will need to keep that local vault a bit longer and wait for us to implement the full support first as you may have to re-import the data.

Ok, so I'll make sure to re-export/import when that time has come and only use my 1Password apps to add new items in the meantime.

Speaking of which, I just tried to follow your support website instructions to get my local vault into 1password.com, but fail to get it to work...on 1password.com I was able to create a new vault (even though I already had an empty "Personal" vault that I didn't see any obvious method of importing my items into), but the new vault looks just like the old "Personal" vault...empty with no menu items that say "import" or something of that sort...why is this essential function so unintuitive? I don't think I am all that inexperienced with picking up new methodologies and software packages.

I remember seeing a QR Code field on my 1password.com sidebar at some earlier point while getting set up but thought that it is there to fill in the account data only, not to import a vault's data...but I can't find that QR Code area anywhere anymore now anyway, so...

**also, I almost missed your reply bc I didn't get a notification via email...where do I make sure that new replies trigger an email notification?

@tillkrueger: Regarding notifications, email notifications for replies is on by default. So unless you went to the trouble to disable them, it's probably in your spam folder. But you can check your settings user your username at the top, then Notifications on the left.

Regarding migrating your data, you cannot do this through the website, since it cannot load your existing local vault. Please open the local vault in 1Password and login to your 1Password Account there as well (both under the Settings "gear" icon > Accounts & Vaults). Then you simply switch to your local vault, select the items (Ctrl A is your friend), and right-click to copy them to your 1Password Account (probably the Personal vault). I hope this helps! :)

I did get a notification for your reply, brent, so I guess it must have been a spam glitch or something, thank you very much!

and thanks for the quick recap of what I'm supposed to do...somehow the way you put it made more sense than what I read in your support section and I just succeeded in uploading my entire db of items into my Personal vault online...brilliant! :)

    thanks again, brenty!

PS: how do I get to that QR Code again, since I seem to be asked for it frequently as I do things in 1Password online and locally?

@tillkrueger: First of all, I am so sorry that I failed to address your QR code question! I knew I was forgetting something... :unamused:

If you login to 1Password.com and go to Get the Apps in your account menu, you can find your QR code and other info there.

Excellent! I'm glad that worked out. :)

Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you got everything transferred over. It sounds like we still have some work to do here when it comes to making 1Password intuitive though. The feedback is greatly appreciated! :)

Ah, of course, that's where I saw the QR Code!

I guess the main thing (for me) is just the icons issue in the Windows version of 1Password.

also, since I usually only do a few of the icons at a time and still have quite a few to go in my database, what is the best method to update the existing vault? delete all and re-import them all (as I suspect that it cannot detect duplicates on import, right)?

which makes me think that some sort of "Sync Vault" might be a nice feature to have for people who frequently groom certain entries and want to see them identical across all their devices (which is already happening, I guess) and online.

well, but for now I am very happy with the progress made at AgileBits! Thanks!!

  • You're welcome, @tillkrueger!

The best way to do this at a later point will probably be to delete the existing data and re-import it. The caveat being, of course, that you shouldn't change any data until then. Depending on the amount of items with custom icons, it might make more sense to re-add them manually.

    We're sorry for the inconvenience.

    Cheers,

    Alex

P.S.: Please keep the feedback coming! :)
