Issues with keyboard shortcuts and menu options
In the latest change log it's stated that you:
- Removed the “minimize to notification area” option. This was made redundant in the last few updates where 1Password already minimized to notification area by default.
Maybe I'm reading that wrong but if the default for 1PW is to minimize to the notification area, why does it minimize to the taskbar for me after the latest update? If I click on the X it closes the main window and keeps the app running with an icon in the notification area just where I want it to be. It's no big deal, I'm just used to clicking minimize to hide the app but it seems I just have to get used to clicking the X instead, but the wording (to me) seems to imply that it should minimize to the notification area.
My real issue is that I'm having trouble using some keyboard shortcuts and some menu options in 1PW mini, especially when restoring 1PW from the notification area.
If I close the main window by clicking X, restore it by the shortcut Ctrl(+Alt)+\ to bring up 1PW mini and then F10 > Open 1Password, I can't highlight the search box with Ctrl+F or Ctrl+E without clicking some other object or menu option first. If I open the app from the notification area instead the search box is already highlighted and the keyboard shortcuts are working just fine. Is this something you can fix or is it just Windows that doesn't like the way 1PW mini opens the main app and there's nothing you can do about it?
The other issue is regarding the options under the gear icon in 1PW mini. Sometimes, no matter if I use the shortcut Ctrl+T or click on "Options" or "Open 1Password" with the keyboard or mouse, nothing happens when I click them. I haven't managed to find a way to consistently repeat this and naturally they are working just fine as I'm writing this...Is this something that should show up in the log if I manage to repeat the bug?

@Backspaze: Sorry for the confusion there! I agree that the wording is a bit unclear, but I wasn't able to come up with anything better myself.
The idea is that there was previously a setting for minimizing the app to the notification area, but since this is just how the app behaves now having a setting for that didn't make any sense. The behaviour is the same; only the setting was removed. Minimizing leaves the app in the task bar; closing the window leaves the app only in the notification area. I hope that helps clarify things!

I'm sorry for the inconvenience! However, in this case I'm not seeing this behaviour, so I wonder if I'm misunderstanding your description. Are you experiencing focus issues with 1Password mini, or the main 1Password window? The keyboard shortcuts you mentioned should work fine if 1Password has focus, but if it doesn't it will fail (with the exception of
Ctrl (Alt) \
, which is global). In my own use, the search box (and therefore 1Password) has focus when I invoke the app, so there's no need for me to use the keyboard shortcut to try to get to search. But I can imagine how, if 1Password itself is not focusing for you, the search box will not be focused, and then of course the shortcuts to get to search won't work either (if another window still has focus). So either it's misbehaving on your system in particular, or I'm missing something.
If you encounter this again, check the log, which may provide some insight. And if you can give me the exact steps to reproduce this, that will help a lot too. Even if I can't personally, we may be able to find a team member who can if necessary.

Hmm. That's a good question! Unfortunately without being able to reproduce this myself, I can't say for certain if that should show up in the log. But the next time it happens, you can type
/log
in the search box and press Enter to see if it does. If you find something there or if you're just not sure, just send it to us at support+windowsbeta@agilebits.com and we'll look into it. Either way, I'll be looking for this behaviour myself now too. Thanks for bringing it up! :)0 -
Hi @Backspaze,
Windows that doesn't like the way 1PW mini opens the main app and there's nothing you can do about it?
Windows has a long strict list of rules about trying to bring up a window that wasn't bought up by a user, it really does not like a running process telling another one to bring up a window frontmost. However, we don't give up easily and we do have some tricks, we just have to figure out how to make it work on all three OS versions we're supporting because there's no one solution for all.
For an example, to force 1Password mini to stay focused, we actually have to send a mouse click on the mini window as soon as it shows up. As you can imagine, that has some weird edge cases, which we've addressed in the recent update but it took a while to figure out why it flickers on some setups, there was a theming issue where the click wasn't going to the window itself.
But I can imagine how, if 1Password itself is not focusing for you, the search box will not be focused, and then of course the shortcuts to get to search won't work either (if another window still has focus). So either it's misbehaving on your system in particular, or I'm missing something.
Like with Brenty, the search field is focused as soon as the 1Password mini comes up for me. It does sound like this is another edge case that I've mentioned before.
Can you tell me if you're using the default Windows 10 theme on your system and/or if you've customized any theming related settings?
The other issue is regarding the options under the gear icon in 1PW mini. Sometimes, no matter if I use the shortcut Ctrl+T or click on "Options" or "Open 1Password" with the keyboard or mouse, nothing happens when I click them.
This will be addressed in a future update. This is a new side effect from the recent update where we made some changes to stop the main 1Password window from showing up out of nowhere when 1Password mini auto-locks in the background. This was causing a lot of frustrations because people would be working and ten minutes later, 1Password suddenly show up and stole their focus.
We're still optimizing the apps to be aware of each other, so that trying to use 1Password mini doesn't need the main app window to be involved.

Ok, here are the exact steps with images to avoid any confusion.
Close the main app window with X.
Bring up 1Password mini with the shortcut
Ctrl (Alt) \
Press F10 or click the gear icon and then click "Open 1Password".
The main app window pops up and appears in focus but the search box is not focused, and
Ctrl+F
orCtrl+E
doesn't work until I click on an object in any of the highlighted areas in the image below.I've emailed a log file to support+windowsbeta@agilebits.com where I performed these steps after a fresh start of 1Password.
As for the other issue, it hasn't happened again, but I will keep an eye on the log if it does.

Hi @Backspaze,
Huge thanks for that list, I definitely misunderstood as I thought the issue was in 1Password mini and you couldn't bring up the menu with the shortcut, I didn't realize you meant it opened the main window where you can't use the shortcuts.
I can reproduce that one and I'll file a bug report with your steps.
Thanks!

All right, now we're on the same page :)
I must say, I wasn't expecting answers on a weekend but thank you for that!

Yep, we'll investigate to get that fixed. I've notice there was some struggle after the window opens up, the titlebar for an example flashes in, out and back in. Maybe that has caused the apparent de-focus in the main window, we'll find out soon.

Just a followup, our engineering team has confirmed this is a focusing bug and the flashing bar that I've mentioned is a sign that the OS refused to focus it.
However, we have something to try to focus it properly. Stay tuned for the update to fix this.
