Syncing Master Password to Windows 6 beta

I initially created an individual license when I loaded the Windows 6 beta on my desktop PC. I then added 1Password to my iOS devices. I changed my Master Password on my iOS devices and noticed it did not update on my Windows 6 beta version. When I add a new vault item in one of my iOS devices, it correctly updates on my Windows 6 beta version. I found a recent posting indicating that the Master Password does not currently update on the beta version. I was successful in updating the Windows 6 beta version to the same (changed) Master Password. If I load the Windows 4 version, will that work to automatically update the Master Password? If not, when do you anticipate that feature getting added to the beta version?

1Password Version: 6.0.245d
Extension Version:
OS Version: Windows 10
Sync Type: Individual License

    Hi @azerby,

Once Dropbox has synced the changes to your PC, 1Password 4 for Windows will see the updated encrypted key file and can only unlock with the new master password you've chosen.

The main difference in 1Password 6 Beta is that we're using an internal database to hold all of your data from various vaults, the database is encrypted with the first password you enter into the app. It has its own encrypted key that is not "linked" yet to the first vault/account but it's on our list to implement in the future.

1Password 4 doesn't have this type of database, it reads/writes directly to your data files, so that's why it can detect new passwords right away. However without the database to hold the data, you can't switch vaults either, 1Password 4 requires you to manually open the other vault and then unlock it with its vault password.

@MikeT I just ran into this on my PC with 1Password 6 Beta. When can we expect Master Passwords to sync correctly using the Windows client?

  • Hi @kop48,

Just to be absolutely clear; no master password is being synced, we don't know anyone's password and 1Password does not store the master password anywhere. We use your master password to decrypt an encrypted key that decrypts your data. It is the ability to update the key from remote sources and/or push the updated key that's not implemented yet in 1Password 6 due to its database structure.

We don't have a timeframe on when this is coming. For now, you have to update the master password manually in 1Password's security settings if you're using 1Password.com account.
