Default shortcut on Scandinavian keyboard

Hi! This is not really a problem but a suggestion.

The default keyboard shortcut for showing 1Password is Ctrl+[Alt+](backward slash). On all Scandinavian keyboard layouts, and some others as well, backward slash is behind AltGr, which is the same as Ctrl+Alt. As a result, trying to write '\' results in 1Password stealing focus.

This is easy to work around once identified, but wastes time. I suggest automatically changing the shortcut if the user has a conflicting keyboard layout.

  • Hi @petrilaarne,

Thanks for writing in with your suggestion.

We plan to add a full keyboard shortcut editor, so that you can add your own keyboard shortcuts from the start to the end as we won't be able to figure out the right defaults for all locales.

For now, you can change the shortcut to something else in the settings, I believe # should work, can you confirm Scandinavian would work with Control + Alt + # as the default shortcut?

To change the shortcut, click on the Settings on top right of the main 1Password 6 window and select Options. On the left sidebar, click on General to modify the Keyboard Shortcuts.

That would not work either, since # is Shift + 3 and AltGr + 3 is £. Special characters are quite packed in Scandinavian layouts thanks to our extra letters!

I personally mapped it to Ctrl + Alt + Ä, which is quite near the backslash key but difficult to mistype. I think your plan is good; these different layouts sure are a can of worms!

    Hi @petrilaarne,

Thanks for the details. We have set the default for # for German and Spanish and I was hoping it'd work for you as well but I'm concerned ä might be problematic. We'll see what we can do prior to finishing up the shortcut editor.

Adding just for the record: like most power users around here, I'm using English (US) Windows, but the keyboard layout is local. Language and region get mixed up time to time, mostly as unwanted translation of UI (technical terms in Finnish are typically hideous ;D).

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi @petrilaarne,

    Thanks again.

Yep, internationalization is a fun thing to work on. We're going to be adding support for it in the near future, so it's going to be a fun time. :sarcastic:
