Password field change in 269?

I've been using KeePass for its auto-type capability in some desktop apps.. and was actually also using it to autotype my master password into 1Password 6 Beta.. it's worked fine until this latest update.

At first I thought the problem was that the window's title changed to remove the word Beta (Is it not beta anymore?) -- But I updated KeePass, detecting the 1Password window's new title, and it still doesn't work.

I can still paste my master password into the 1Password box - which is good - but autotype still doesn't work (in regular or obfuscated modes.. both seem broken.)

Was this intentional? I didn't see anything in the release notes that seemed related or could have caused it. It might of course be something else entirely or related to my computer.

I suppose once 1Password gets autotype I wouldn't need this extra layer.. and I'm probably the definition of edge-case.. but thought I'd ask in case it was overlooked or accidental. Thanks.

    Hi @dmds,

We haven't changed anything related to the password field, we did change the name of the title as we're prepping for our first stable update but nothing else. Are you trying to auto-type into the main window or 1Password mini? Also, are you using the global auto-type shortcut feature? If yes, try re-adding the program again to the entry and see if it works.

Also, please make sure you always use Keepass's obfuscation mode (never ever use the regular mode) for your 1Password master password because you are exposing the master password to every app that's listening to these keyboard/clipboard events, especially clipboard managers that are storing the content all the time.

I did re-add the program to be sure the new title was correct. It didn't help. Still somehow seems like the most likely issue though.

I am referring to the main window. It worked in previous versions but stopped in 269. It never worked with mini because there was not a title and the window disappears when trying to switch to KeePass and select it. :)

It is the global shortcut key (using CTRL-ALT-A) and it still works in other windows. I agree about the clipboard and obfuscation is always on (except when I was testing this) -- Even obfuscation isn't perfect.

Anyway, I'm not sure what's happened. If truly nothing changed with the text box (newly swallowing keystrokes but not CTRL-V?) - then it must be something tricky about the title. I selected the new 1Password window title from the Keypass drop down though, and it didn't help.

It's not a critical issue by any means. Would there be any reason to (or not to) downgrade 1Password to previous version and re-test? Only purpose would be to isolate it again on 269 - though I'm pretty sure - I'm not sure how the installer handles going backward.

  • Hi @dmds,

Yea, we have not changed anything there. It could be a focusing issue that we're constantly improving in each build but so far, I haven't seen this changed in the main window.

If truly nothing changed with the text box (newly swallowing keystrokes but not CTRL-V?)

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you can't make it work with the regular mode either, so it's not just keystrokes but also clipboard events. Auto-type isn't any different from what you're doing normally with the keyboard, it's the same input event going into the app.

I'm very curious to know why this happened. Have you tried rebooting first? We have seen a lot of weird glitches that remains until reboots and magically, they never happened again.

Only purpose would be to isolate it again on 269 - though I'm pretty sure - I'm not sure how the installer handles going backward.

You can uninstall the current build via Control Panel and install the previous one from here..

Ctrl-V always worked -- if I put it on the clipboard I could paste it. The issue was with Ctrl-Alt-A in either mode (regular/obfuscated)

Ctrl-Alt-A still worked in other programs so it was confusing..

Now however! At your suggestion, I just restarted the PC and now it is suddenly working again(!) As often as that advice helps tech problems, I'm still somewhat surprised and confused about what was happening :)

I did need to use "Update and shutdown" because there were a couple pending Windows updates apparently.. Another variable.

Anyway, this means I'm happy enough for now --- thanks for your time as always.

  • Hi @dmds,

Awesome. We have a rule here; when in doubt, reboot. We often don't find out why it happened, especially when they never happen again and these type of glitches are virtually impossible to reproduce.

    You're welcome!
