Use 1Pw4 for Windows or 1Pw6 Beta for evaluation purposes?
I am using the 30 day trial version of 1Password 6 Beta on a desktop with Windows 10 and Chrome browser. I downloaded 1Pw Beta about half a week ago and have spent many hours testing. In due course I will require to sync my desktop with an iPhone 7 and a second off-site desktop.
My purpose in evaluation is to learn enough about 1Password's ease of use and features generally in order6.1.272d to decide on whether to subscribe to an Individual membership, or whether some of the other options (Dashlane, LastPass, etc) would suit me better. My primary area of focus is to evaluate the capability of Login features initially, and not so much on Secure Notes, Credit Cards, Identities, etc for the time being.
Having read a good number of posts here it is obvious that 1Pw6 Beta still has a good deal of development in front before it is fully functional. Presumably 1Pw4 is fully functional but does not have all of the developmental advances or features of 1Pw6.
My question is whether I should be using 1Pw4 or 1Pw6 for the purposes of my evaluation?
I trust that you can help.
1Password Version: 6.1.272d

@dchass: We sure can! Thanks for reaching out. This is a tough question since it really comes down to personal preference and your specific needs, but I'll do my best to give you an overview. Just be sure to let me know if you have any questions, or have details to add that might help me focus on things that are most relevant to you. These are the main differences between the two versions of 1Password for Windows you're looking at:
- 1Password 4 is a mature, full featured "classic" Windows app (i.e. more in the vein of Windows 7) that supports local vaults, which can be sync'd via Dropbox or WLAN Server, and has advanced features like Auto-Type.
- 1Password 6 is a new "modern" Windows app (i.e. a Windows 10 look and feel) that supports the 1Password.com subscription service, and has been built from scratch to allow support for hi-res displays and accessibility.
However, the similarities are that they support login saving and filling via the browser extensions, and you can have a 30 day trial with either (or both). Honestly, since you're new to 1Password and use a number of platforms and devices, I'd say that a trial of the 1Password.com service using 1Password 6 might be the best place to start. If that meets your needs now, it greatly simplifies things, since you won't have to manage licenses or sync configurations. And if you find yourself wanting a more traditional desktop app with more features, then give 1Password 4 a test drive.
But like I said, if you're not sure, let me know more about how you anticipate using 1Password and any questions you have so far. Cheers! :)

Thank you for your prompt and helpful response.
By the way, I love the 1Password graphics and interface, when its not being a little buggy. I experienced some logins working and then not (seemed to to occur about the time I downloaded the IOS app?)
- plus Ctrl \ is not working (coming later)? and
- and secondary login field is not available yet.
Anyway, I'm doing as you suggest and trialling 1Password 6. You mentioned that if I want a more traditional desktop app with more features, then give 1Password 4 a test drive. I am not necessarily looking for a traditional desktop appearance but can you tell me a little more about the principal features I'm missing in not having 1Password 4, ie those which would be of main benefit in the password login process?
Many thanks.

@dchass: Any time! That's what we're here for. :)

Thanks! We're proud of it, but we're always working to improve it as well, so be sure to let us know where you run into issues.

This is usually site-specific, so let us know the URLs and we can investigate.

The keyboard shortcuts are there, but it sounds like it isn't working for you for some reason. Do you have a localized keyboard or settings in Windows? Have you installed the browser extension? Try changing the shortcut to something else in 1Password Settings > Options > General, in case there's some conflict. And if you're still having trouble, let me know which browser version you're using, and if there's any "security" software or other extensions which may be interfering.
and secondary login field is not available yet.
Do you mean multiple URLs in a login item? While these cannot be added in 1Password 6 yet, it can display them if you've added them on another device (or in the 1Password.com web interface).

Hmm. That's a tough one. 1Password 6 has most key features now, but where it lacks primarily is refinements that come only with time. For example, you'll get an autosave prompt in the browser if 1Password 6 detects that you've logged into a site with new credentials...but if it isn't able to detect this, there isn't currently a way to manually bring up the save prompt. Not having full (read/write/attachments) support for local vaults is a bummer for me and other long-time 1Password users, but that probably won't affect you. And as I mentioned previously, Auto-Type is a really cool feature from 1Password 4 that will unfortunately take some time to implement. And, going back to multiple URLs, item editing is still fairly basic. Mainly, there are some pretty niche features it doesn't have, and the rest are there and simply need to be filled out.
Many thanks.
Likewise! Thanks for checking out 1Password, and let me know if there's anything else I can help with. :)

Thank you.
You and Agilebits have been amazingly responsive. There were four sites which stopped working including
- Whirlpool https://whirlpool.net.au/profile/
- and Yahoo Finance
but after a reboot all commenced working again. No, by a secondary login field, I simply meant a field for a second password, as required by some sites, eg banks here in Australia. I read here somewhere that this is coming.
I understand too that there are other features which come once I subscribe, rather than using the trial version.
Re Ctrl \ The keyboard shortcuts are there, but it sounds like it isn't working for you for some reason. That's a pity I will experiment. Yes, I have the Chrome extension.
Thanks again for your help.

So how is it possible to save/edit 1Password beta credentials in this instance?

@dchass: You're welcome! 1Password isn't perfect, so we're here to help and try to improve things.

Ah, interesting. Be sure to let us know if you encounter any further issues. Glad to hear it's working for you now.

1Password 6 already supports saving and filling these. It sounds like you may be trying to create multiple password fields by hand in the main 1Password app. This is not possible since 1Password won't know how to fill these. It's looking for a single password field by default, and then it will also fill additional fields based on what is present on the page when saving the login in the browser. Otherwise there's no way to differentiate between multiple "password" fields to know which one goes where.
I understand too that there are other features which come once I subscribe, rather than using the trial version.
The trial is fully functional for 30 days, so what you see is what you'll get if you decide to purchase. With the subscription, once the trial is over, the account will be frozen. You'll still be able to access your data, but you won't be able to make any further changes without subscribing.

Be sure to let me know if you're still having trouble with the keyboard shortcuts. That's not acceptable, since it makes 1Password much more convenient to use!

You can create a new login item in the main 1Password app. We'll be adding the ability to force 1Password to save in the browser in a future update. And either way, be sure to let us know URLs where 1Password isn't detecting the login submission so we can improve that as well! :)
