I am a few days into a new 30 day trial on Windows 10, (coming from Dashlane), and impressed by what I see.
I am using 1Password Beta v 6.1.272d on a Chrome browser.

Where do I find answers to some elementary navigation questions. I have a rough idea but would like to see the answers to such important basic questions confirmed on screen/help somewhere.
What is the accepted name for, and purpose of the following

Logo/icon in top RH corner
Obviously relates to Chrome

  • Vaults dropdown (LHS) shows does not list all passwords loaded until I commence typing first letter of each password title
  • Gear icon (RHS) > Options> Update when pressed gave no response at all, not even a plain yes or no, or NA this is a beta?
  • Gear icon (RHS) > Open 1PWD - opens the main edit screen
  • Gear icon (RHS) > Password Generator - working

System tray icon bottom RH corner
- Vaults dropdown (LHS) immediatelyshows all items in the vault and seems to be much easier to load programs from here cf above
- Gear icon (RHS) > exactly the same behaviour as above

ON last start up, there was a pop up that said from memory I needed Password Helper. What is this and where do i find it?

Many thanks,
David

  • Hi David,

We're pleased you're impressed so far, we're really excited to hear about your progress during the trial and are grateful to you for taking the time out of your days to feedback and ask questions.

Let's see if we can clarify a few areas for you here, all except the last point you've mentioned relate to 1Password mini / 1Password Browser Extension.

    1Password Browser Extension / 1Password mini

    Logo/icon in top RH corner
    Obviously relates to Chrome

Correct, this is a button which will show 1Password extension / 1Password mini within Chrome.

Vaults dropdown (LHS) shows does not list all passwords loaded until I commence typing first letter of each password title.

Correct, what's happening here is 1Password mini is only showing you matching results until you search otherwise.
For example, if you open 1Password mini whilst being on, lets say, Amazon.com, if you've got an Amazon login stored it will only show you that result. If there are no matching URLs/logins for Amazon, it will appear blank. Does that help to clarify the behaviour here?

Gear icon (RHS) > Options> Update when pressed gave no response at all, not even a plain yes or no, or NA this is a beta?

My apologies for this not being clear enough, this is an area we are currently working on. If there was an update available when you check for the update, the update will appear clearly. We do need to incorporate the confirmation message to let you know you're up to date and there is no further updates currently available. Please bear with us, we should have this there soon for you.

Gear icon (RHS) > Open 1PWD - opens the main edit screen

Thats right, 1Password primarily is the main window with the 3 columns. The mini version is kind of a cool little sidekick who helps surface items from the main window into a convenient smaller window. There are times when you need to do things not currently present in 1Password mini, like editing items so this is where you're able to do so.

Gear icon (RHS) > Password Generator - working

Yeah, I love this feature. I cannot imagine being without the Password Generator now. So handy!

Vaults dropdown (LHS) immediately shows all items in the vault and seems to be much easier to load programs from here cf above

Boom, thats it. As you're opening up 1Password mini not from within the browser, 1Password mini wants to be as useful as possible to you by showing you everything you've got.

    1Password Browser Extension Helper dialog
Ah yes, the dialog window you see when you first start using 1Password. This is in place in order to ensure that 1Password and the Browser extension are able to speak with each other. The 'register helper' dialog is a one time prompt, however you can perform the same action from the Gear Icon > Options > Browsers screen should this have been missed. It sounds like you've got it working already though. :+1:

Thanks David, I've just seen your other thread so I'll meet you over there now.

    Thanks Benji.

That is a courteous, comprehensive and helpful response. You have answered all questions.

Since first posting, I have noticed the Help sidebar in 1Pwd 4 and I imagine 1Pwd 6 would also institute this as it comes out of Beta. Would that be correct?

(To ask another question - slightly off topic - will the custom individual login logos or icons also become available as 1Pwd 6 comes out of Beta? This will really start to enhance the already very slick graphics of 1Pwd 6)..

    Many thanks again
    David

  • Ah, David - You're too kind. :chuffed:
I'm glad i've been able to help you, we're actually recently out of beta and excited about the next releases!

We are always looking for better ways to improve 1Password, its very important to us that the apps are as useful and intuitive as we can make them. That being said, I would love to understand what the 'Help sidebar' is you've managed to find, in 1Password 4. :+1:

As for the rich icons, yes we are working hard to bring these back into 1Password. We did originally have them but there some performance issues we wasn't happy with so they've been disabled for a bit. They do really enhance the experience, and I for one, can't wait to have them there.

    Thanks David.

    Hi Benji
    Thanks again for responding.

I had assumed there would be some fanfare about coming out of beta. I downloaded beta and assumed I was still using it. Was there an announcement?

The 'Help' sidebar was shown on https://support.1password.com/guides/windows/ saying "Welcome to 1Password 4 for Windows". This was reached after pressing the Windows icon for 1Password, and - note - did not take me to 1Password 6?

Looking forward to using those rich icons sometime soon!

.... and by the way, it occurs to me that this thread/topic is still shown under the Windows Beta listing, just to add a little to the sight air of mystery!! ;)

  • Hi @dchass,

I had assumed there would be some fanfare about coming out of beta. I downloaded beta and assumed I was still using it.

That is mostly because 1Password 6 doesn't have all the features that everyone want right now, we will make a bigger fanfare when it has everything implemented. 1Password 6 will coexist with 1Password 4 for a while, with the former as an app for 1Password.com customers and 1Password 4 being offered for the standalone licensed customers.

The purpose of the first stable release is that it is stable to use, which doesn't mean feature complete. Our aim is to roll the app out in stages, first stage is to get a build available that is reliable from now on as 1Password 6 was a new codebase and a new codebase needs to go through months of development and testing. The next stage is to add the features and keep building the app.

    Was there an announcement?

Yep, we've announced it on our blog and Twitter: https://blog.agilebits.com/2016/10/13/windows-teams/

A couple of Windows web sites also posted about it.

This was reached after pressing the Windows icon for 1Password, and - note - did not take me to 1Password 6?

Ah, the user guides on the https://support.1Password.com. We don't have one yet for 1Password 6, we're actually integrating it with the general articles as one of the goals for 1Password 6 for Windows is to be consistent with 1Password 6 for Mac. The end goal is that the same help article applies to both platforms. So far from what we've heard from many of our customers, we did manage to make it consistent and have a similar experience between both platforms but not all the way there yet. That's our next goal, get all the features implemented.

Thank you MikeT for responding in some detail.

You mentioned that the announcement was made on the blog, link above. I did see it before posting earlier, but did not study it in detail as the announcement appeared to clearly relate to Teams. Arcsech and others it appears felt that way too, and your own people agreed that it was mainly a 1Password for Teams announcement. Like the others, I felt a little left out.

I am not wanting to be critical because I am really enjoying learning 1Password and I downloaded knowing it was then Beta. It is a great program and my one slight reservation is to have to wait for the many great features I hear about which are still in the pipeline, and to be wary of how long it might be before they arrive, and when they do arrive, how well they work for me.

I am about half way (I think) through a 30d trial period. What will be the options available to me at the end of 30 days?

    Thanks for your help
    David

  • Hi @dchass,

Our founder, Dave, and CEO, Shiner, have explained in the same blog comments as to why it has been done this way. However, despite it being focused on Teams, it is available and supported for all 1Password.com customers, especially Individuals and Families. The only reason it is not mentioning the last two plans is because the customers want more from 1Password 6 before they can use it, which is something we're not providing yet. Once we get all of the requested features implemented, we'll make another announcement.

What will be the options available to me at the end of 30 days?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. If you need more than what 1Password 6 for Windows can provide right now or at the end of the 30 days, then my suggestion is to let the trial expire or delete the account once you've successfully move the data out. In the expired mode or as we call it, frozen, you can still sign in and see your data, you just won't be able to make changes. This is a good way to see the progress we make without paying, you can still use all apps in frozen states. However, I'd suggest looking for something that will fit your needs right now, not what it could do in the near future. We want you to be secure at any given moment but we understand that we may not be able to provide that need for you right now. All we can say is that we're not slowing down and we will continue to push updates as we have for the past several months.

Thank you MikeT for your response.

So as an individual user I can freeze as you mention, or I can subscribe @ $2.99pm. I believe I read that there is a license option as well? I would probably lean towards a subscription which I presume would include automatic updates. I have now worked out that I have 22 days of the trial remaining. So much has happened here in the last 8 days!

I must say, Agilebits have an amazingly responsive, helpful and customer focussed team here on these forums. Well done, and it adds a compelling reason to use 1Password.

    Many thanks

Indeed, license purchases are each separate, and sync must be configured. The subscription service, on the other hand, includes not only all of the apps and all updates, but automatic built-in sync: you just login to your 1Password Account on each device to access your data.

Thanks so much for the kind words! We couldn't do what we do without the support of all of our awesome customers though. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions, comments, or feedback. We're here for you! :)

  • Hi @dchass,

In addition to what Brenty wrote, I want to mention that 1Password 6 for Windows at the moment is limited to 1Password.com subscriptions, as it doesn't yet support writing to or creating new local vaults. Once we implement that support, it can then be used with licenses. If you want licenses and full writing support to local vaults, you'd have to use 1Password 4 for Windows for now.

In addition, automatic updates is not a part of the subscription itself, all apps will support this for both licensed and 1Password.com accounts. If you meant all future upgrades, then yes, the subscription means you get all of the future updates/upgrades included automatically at no extra cost versus license upgrade fees.
