Should I close my second account?

In attempting to switch from an individual to a family account, I accidentally created a second account. I've successfully transferred all my data from my personal account to the family account, and I've also linked both accounts to all my 1PW apps. However, now I'm not sure if I should delete my personal account. I don't want to manage two accounts, but years from now, when my children move out, I may want to revert to a personal account. What would you recommend?

FYI: The top hit Knowledgebase video that came up when I searched "family" ("Move your existing 1Password data to a 1Password account") was clear and instructive but misleading given my situation. It would be helpful to have a video/note that comes up in the help search, indicating that it's possible to convert from individual to family/team.

Thanks.

  • Hi @skeeter_pants! I'm sorry for the confusion. While you could keep both accounts around, they will have different Account Keys, which means you have two to keep track of. I'd recommend deleting the individual account and when you need one down the road, convert your family account to an individual one. You can do this from your Family Settings page. :) If you've moved your items to your family, you can delete your individual account by signing in to it at https://my.1password.com, clicking your name in the top right, and clicking My Profile. There's a link to delete the account at the bottom of that page.

Thanks for letting us know! I'll chat with the docs team and see if we can get that improved.

Thanks, Jacob. Sounds like a good plan. Down the road, if I convert my family account to a personal one, will each member of the family have the same option to convert to an individual account?

  • @skeeter_pants Sweet! :sunglasses: To convert your account to an individual one, you would need to remove the other family members to it. You'd essentially be converting the family account itself to an individual account. To get your other family members their own separate accounts, have them create individual accounts of their own, move their data to them, and then you can remove them from the family so you can convert that.

Jacob, I've been building out my family account, and I've dropped my personal account from all platforms except for my Windows desktop app. Am I missing a trick to delete my personal account from that app while keeping my family account active?

    Thanks.

  • @skeeter_pants If you've signed in to your family account in 1Password 6 for Windows, you can remove your old account there by clicking the gear in the top right, then choosing Accounts & Vaults -> your name -> Sign out. Now you should be all set. :)

Jacob, thanks for the suggestion. I followed your directions, and when I clicked on "sign out" nothing happened. I've repeated the process after restarting the program and restarting my computer, but still no luck. It's not a very big deal to still have both accounts affiliated with the app, except that as I create more vaults with my family account, the drop-down menu for selecting vaults is getting cumbersome. Would you recommend uninstalling and re-installing the program?

    Thanks.

  • Hi @skeeter_pants,

Can you email us your 1Password diagnostics report, so we can see why it is not signing you out of the second account. There was an old bug we've fixed related to this but it is possible there's something else going on.

Please use this guide to generate the 1Password diagnostic report and email it to us at support+windows@agilebits.com. Also, in the email, include the link to this thread along with your forum username, so that we can connect the email to this thread.

Let us know here when you've sent it, so we can confirm we got the email.

    Thanks!
