Why isn't Ctrl-\ working?

I'm an experienced Mac user of 1Password. I had to move to Windows so I now have the Windows version, with my passwords and logins sync'd from my Mac. I understand that Ctrl-\ in Windows is the equivalent of Cmd-\ on the Mac. When I tried that, nothing happens. I launched 1Password and it is in the task bar (or whatever Windows calls the bar at the bottom). Why isn't it working?

In the Mac version you can go to an entry and you can see the login and the password fields. The password is obscured but you can copy the value or reveal the value. How do you do that in the Windows version? If I double-click on an entry I see a table at the bottom with the password but copying it requires you to double click on a row in the table, then copying the password with Ctrl-C. This is very crude. Surely there is a more elegant way. Or is the Windows version really that 1990s?

  • Hi @emmgee,

    Thanks for writing in.

Yes, it is Control + \ on Windows. Do you see the 1Password icon in your web browser, the 1Password browser extensions must be installed before you can use that shortcut to fill your data.

One more thing, can you confirm what version of 1Password is installed on your computer? Is it 1Password 4 or 1Password 6? You can find out by opening 1Password and go to the Help Menu > About 1Password. If you don't see the Help Menu, you can click on the Settings icon on top right to see the version on the bottom of the Settings Menu. Tell us the version number you have.

The Windows program will not have the same UI as the macOS version of 1Password, they're built natively using the standard OS UI frameworks. In 1Password 4, we use Windows' built-in UI components and yes, it's actually using the same design as it runs from Windows 7 to Windows 10. In fact, it can even work on XP but we don't support it anymore.

1Password 6 is our next generation client built on Microsoft's latest modern frameworks with .NET, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Universal Windows Platform (UWP) for the UWP version of 1Password 6. It will have a more modern experience that's more consistent with 1Password 6 for macOS but 1Password 6 doesn't have all features just yet.

How do you do that in the Windows version? If I double-click on an entry I see a table at the bottom with the password but copying it requires you to double click on a row in the table, then copying the password with Ctrl-C.

You don't have to double-click on it, that will do something differently. Double-click can either result into the item's editor coming up or open the site in your browser. It sounds like you're editing the item.

Click on the item once on top and then you should see the details below it, like this:

Next to the password field, you can click to copy it to the clipboard, auto-type it, and/or reveal it (lock icon). Pressing Control + R will reveal all concealed passwords.

The 1Password browser extension is installed in Chrome. I picked the Yahoo email web site at random to check out if Ctrl-\ was working and when I got to the password page (you enter your email address on one page then it sends you to another page for your password), 1Password asked if I wanted to update the Yahoo entry. That's strange because I haven't changed the password. I deleted the password (which Chrome had inserted – apparently because my passwords came over to Windows given that I signed into Chrome), entered Ctrl-\ and it worked. I tried my bank web page and it worked as well. I'll try one more now...

I just tried it with the Fitbit site. It worked as expected. It didn't ask me to update the 1Password entry.

I have 1Password 4. When first looked for the Windows version, all I saw were two subscription plans. I send a note to Agilebits and asked if there was a deal I could get since I'm a long-time 1Password user. I was sent a promo code and was told that I could buy an individual license and avoid the subscription. I didn't see 1Password 6. Where can I find it?

I looked more closely at the UI and noticed that there is a section at the bottom of the screen that was out of view. I pulled it up and saw the expected user name and password. I figured out how to reveal the password. So at this point the Windows version seems more familiar. My first experience reminded me of Windows 95...

I'm an experienced Windows user from way back but have been lucky enough to use a Mac at home and work for the last several years. I remember most of my Windows skills... As I'm re-entering the world of Windows I'm having the expected bumps along the way. Not sure why 1Password was so wonky the first day or two but I think I can get it to work normally now.

    Thanks...

I would suggest turning off Chrome's internal password manager, it can lead to conflicts like that. Here's how.

    I didn't see 1Password 6. Where can I find it?

1Password 6 is limited to the 1Password.com service at the moment, it has read-only support for local vaults. Only 1Password 4 has full support for local vaults if you want to keep using your current setup with local vaults and not use our cloud-based service.

We do plan to add full local vault support to 1Password 6 in a future update but we don't have a timeframe on that.

You can find it here: https://1password.com/downloads/

Yea, it shouldn't show up with the bottom view hidden like that, it sounds like maybe it didn't have enough space to resize itself properly. We'll look into it, thanks for letting us know.

Let us know if there's anything else we can help you with, we're happy to help anytime.
