How to create logins for Windows exe programs and Windows 10 apps

Options

I know this has been asked for but the url cited with the information is broken:
https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-windows/4/en/topic/creating-an-application-login

I want to create logins for standard executables as well as Windows 10 apps like Netflix.

  • Hi @Jassword,

    Thanks for writing in.

    Here's the right URL: https://support.1password.com/guides/windows/create-app-login.html

Where did you originally get that URL?

Thanks Mike. Came across that URL in google search results, from 2015. For example:

    https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/55029/creating-an-application-login

  • Ah yes, unfortunately, that's a side effect of updating URLs over time.

My suggestion is to try searching in our support page here: https://support.1Password.com or in the user manuals itself: https://support.1password.com/guides/windows/

Ok, will do that in the future. Now, for the benefit of others reading this -- here's what I found was needed to use this method with Windows 10 Apps (as opposed to exe programs):

When I followed the Add App procedure after launching the Netflix app, it added just the generic entry "ApplicationFrameWindow", which naturally enough, didn't work. So I replaced it with "Netflix:", which is the way you start the Netflix app from the Start menu Run command. That worked fine. So you may want to update the help with a special word about Win 10 apps.

@Jassword: Ah, do you mean you got the Netflix app from the Windows Store? That is interesting. I'll have to experiment with that, and we'll see about updating the documentation. Thanks for the info! :)

Yes, the Windows Store apps. Apparently you just specify them by name with an appended colon ":". Though, it's not clear to me how you reliably determine what the name is for any app. So "Netflix:", "Spotify:" work but not "OneNote:" Perhaps the key is to use the AppUserModelId.

    Hi @Jassword,

We use Windows' API to grab the window's class name to identity it. UWP apps is the exception to this as they use different APIs. We are going to change how Auto-Type works in the next version of 1Password, so it will get better at identifying both type of apps.
